Book excerpt: In Rebuilding the Pyramids, we have the rare gift of a lyric carved in the patient space of the wish to live, to continue, to breathe, to make a genuine space inside our lives. The lyric here is carved out of Keatsian spaces, where the metronome in the poet's ear marks endings more definite than meter and beginnings more beatific than associative pirouettes. Amado shows us the moments of life as meditations, and he makes them anew and shows us how we can always build these beacons that align themselves to what lives beyond us. -Afaa Michael Weaver

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early eighteenth century, at the peak of the Enlightenment, an unlikely team of European scientists and naval officers set out on the world’s first international, cooperative scientific expedition. Intent on making precise astronomical measurements at the Equator, they were poised to resolve one of mankind’s oldest mysteries: the true shape of the Earth. In Measure of the Earth, award-winning science writer Larrie D. Ferreiro tells the full story of the Geodesic Mission to the Equator for the very first time. It was an age when Europe was torn between two competing conceptions of the world: the followers of René Descartes argued that the Earth was elongated at the poles, even as Isaac Newton contended that it was flattened. A nation that could accurately determine the planet’s shape could securely navigate its oceans, giving it great military and imperial advantages. Recognizing this, France and Spain organized a joint expedition to colonial Peru, Spain’s wealthiest kingdom. Armed with the most advanced surveying and astronomical equipment, they would measure a degree of latitude at the Equator, which when compared with other measurements would reveal the shape of the world. But what seemed to be a straightforward scientific exercise was almost immediately marred by a series of unforeseen catastrophes, as the voyagers found their mission threatened by treacherous terrain, a deeply suspicious populace, and their own hubris. A thrilling tale of adventure, political history, and scientific discovery, Measure of the Earth recounts the greatest scientific expedition of the Enlightenment through the eyes of the men who completed it—pioneers who overcame tremendous adversity to traverse the towering Andes Mountains in order to discern the Earth’s shape. In the process they also opened the eyes of Europe to the richness of South America and paved the way for scientific cooperation on a global scale.

They communicate an urgent warning to everyone alive today! Complex bronze and gold clocks with multiple dials are found in museums around the world. Why they have such advanced intricacy has stumped scientists for hundreds of years. This book reveals why the ancients built so many pyramids, observatories as well as those complex gold and bronze clocks with more than one dial. It surprised me greatly to discover that their various complex designs in one way or another converge on 21 December 2012. It amazes me that ancient cultures separated by thousands of miles of geography and thousands of years in chronology agree so precisely in the cyclical nature of time, history and prophecy, which is history written in advance. The most famous example is the Mayan-Aztec calendar, which ends its 25,626-year cycle on that momentous date. Some researchers have also found 21 December 2012 in what is called, the Bible Code. Using very different research methods, I discovered it in the Bible's book of Revelation and Daniel's prophecies. It is one of the most important dates in the plan of God for all humanity!

Book excerpt: The 14th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition (CIARP 2009, C- gresoIberoAmericanodeReconocimientodePatrones)formedthelatestofanow longseriesofsuccessfulmeetingsarrangedbytherapidlygrowingIberoamerican pattern recognition community. The conference was held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and organized by the Mexican Association for Computer Vision, Neural Computing and Robotics (MACVNR). It was sponsodred by MACVNR and ?ve other Iberoamerican PR societies. CIARP 2009 was like the previous conferences in the series supported by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). CIARP 2009 attracted participants from all over the world presenting sta- of-the-artresearchon mathematical methods and computing techniques for p- tern recognition, computer vision, image and signal analysis, robot vision, and speech recognition, as well as on a wide range of their applications. This time the conference attracted participants from 23 countries,9 in Ibe- america, and 14 from other parts of the world. The total number of submitted papers was 187, and after a serious review process 108 papers were accepted, all of them with a scienti?c quality above overall mean rating. Sixty-four were selected as oral presentations and 44 as posters. Since 2008 the conference is almost single track, and therefore there was no real grading in quality between oral and poster papers. As an acknowledgment that CIARP has established itself as a high-quality conference, its proceedings appear in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. Moreover, its visibility is further enhanced by a selection of a set of papers that will be published in a special issue of the journal Pattern Recognition Letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s easy to see that building the Egyptian pyramids using a ramp would have been impractical and too labor intensive to make sense. And it's doubtful to think they were built by aliens or giant people, big cranes or flying machines. But how were they built? After years of pondering and running model after model through my mind, I have come up with a theory that makes sense, seems to answer all unreasonable questions, and is clearly possible in their days using simple physics, mechanical means, common materials, and skilled human beings. This plan uses 0.1 percent the energy needed to drag a stone up a ramp and to set a stone on top of the pyramid every two to three minutes, putting the stone cutters to their limit.
