Pusey's recent advertisement to his "Adaptation" of the Paradise of the Soul, is one of the most remarkable instances of the manner in which a person can escape from the authority of all living bodies under the veil of submitting to antiquity. In this advertisement Dr. P. does not seem to be aware that he is determining, on his own authority, some of the most difficult and most disputed questions, and then on this, his own view, judging all persons and bodies, and even the Saints themselves. He thinks it not at all presumptuous to assume, or indeed to say, that he has mastered the very mind of antiquity--that " her thoughts, her faith, her exposition of Scripture, are his;" not at all presumptuous to say, that his own Church is defective according to this standard, and to supply what she has omitted; not at all presumptuous to say, that the Saints have erred by excess, and that, having "lived in a system partly unsanctioned by Scripture and antiquity," they will be glad to see the errors that clave to them here removed by this standard! He cannot see that his opinions on all these points are disputed; that he has the authority of the wisest and best against him, and the majority of all bodies against him; he cannot see, in fact, that, while professedly "submitting Thus, then, I came to the conclusion, that the assertion that Rome imposes unwarrantable terms of communion, was only another way of saying that the English Church is accused by the Roman Church of heresy and schism, and did not plead guilty. It is precisely the assertion which every heretical or schismatical body must make in self-defence against the Church which excommunicates it. It proves nothing, therefore....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the role of Judaism and the Jewish people in God's plan for the salvation of mankind, from Abraham through the Second Coming, as revealed by the Catholic faith and by a thoughtful examination of history. It will give Christians a deeper understanding of Judaism, both as a religion in itself and as a central component of Christian salvation. To Jews it reveals the incomprehensible importance, nobility and glory that Judaism most truly has. It examines the unique and central role Judaism plays in the destiny of the world. It documents that throughout history attacks on Jews and Judaism have been rooted not in Christianity, but in the most anti-Christian of forces. Areas addressed include: the Messianic prophecies in Jewish scripture; the anti-Christian roots of Nazi anti-Semitism; the links between Nazism and Arab anti-Semitism; the theological insights of major Jewish converts; and the role of the Jews in the Second Coming. "Perplexed by controversies new and old about the destiny of the Jewish people? Read this book by a Jew who became a Catholic for a well-written, provocative, ground-breaking account. Some of the answers most have never heard before." Ronda Chervin, Ph.D., Hebrew-Catholic

Book excerpt: "John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church for Catholicity and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. Volume XXXII contains a further 513 letters which have surfaced since the publication of the preceding volumes, spanning the years 1830 until virtually the eve of Newman's death on 11 August 1890. There are, for example, thirty-four letters to Thomas Arnold junior following his conversion to Roman Catholicism on 18 January 1856 in Van Diemen's Land and his subsequent return to England with his wife and family; seven letters to Charles Marriott and seven letters from him dealing mainly with the sale of the Littlemore property following Newman's secession to Rome on 9 October 1845; and eighteen letters to various members of the Mozley family, including two letters to Jemima in the wake of the Achilli trial in 1853. Other recipients include the Duke of Norfolk and his family; Charles Wellington Furse, Principal of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, near Oxford, and future Archdeacon of Westminster; and Miss Maria Trench, who was preparing some of Keble's papers and reviews for publication. There are also two letters to Pope Leo XIII petitioning him for the canonization of John Fisher, Thomas More, and the English Martyrs."--pub. desc. v.32 Suppl.
