Book excerpt: Real-Time Data Acquisition in Human Physiology: Real-Time Acquisition, Processing, and Interpretation—A MATLAB-Based Approach focuses on the design and development of a computer-based system to detect and digitally process human ECG, EMG, and carotid pulse waveforms in real time. The indigenous system developed and described in this book allows for an easy-to-interface, simple hardware arrangement for bio-signal detection. The computational functionality of MATLAB is verified for viewing, digital filtration, and feature extraction of acquired bio-signals. This book demonstrates a method of providing a relatively cost-effective solution to human physiology real-time monitoring, processing, and interpretation that is more realizable and would directly benefit a larger population of patients. Presents an application-driven, interdisciplinary, and experimental approach to bio-signal processing with a focus on acquiring, processing, and understanding human ECG, EMG, carotid pulse data and HRV. Covers instrumentation and digital signal processing techniques useful for detecting and interpreting human physiology in real time, including experimental layout and methodology in an easy-to-understand manner. Discusses development of a computer-based system that is capable of direct interface through the sound port of a PC and does not require proprietary DAQ units and ADC units. Covers a MATLAB-based algorithm for online noise reduction, features extraction techniques, and infers diagnostic features in real time. Provides proof of concept of a PC-based twin channel acquisition system for the recognition of multiple physiological parameters. Establishes the use of Digital Signal Controller to enhance features of acquired human physiology. Presents the use of carotid pulse waveforms for HRV analysis in critical situations using a very simple hardware/software arrangement.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reports a versatile real-time data acquisition, signal processing and sensor calibrationsystem using NI (National Instruments) LabVIEW. The goal of the developed system is tosimultaneously monitor different physiological parameters in an animal's brain during traumaticbrain injury (TBI). The system is developed in conjunction with the smart catheter sensor array whichis an integrated platform of multiple microsensors in a single microcatheter device. The sensorssimultaneously records key physiological parameters from an animal brain which includestemperature, partial pressure of Oxygen, Glucose, Lactate, Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) and neuralactivity. The system after data acquisition and processing displays the real-time data in a userinterface in a clear and concise way. A sensor calibration software is also developed using LabVIEWwhich provides calibration solution for the Smart Catheter sensors. The developed system consists of a front end motherboard circuit interface which encodesthe real-time analog signal to serial bits and transmits it to a backend system for data-logging andsignal processing. The back-end system consists of a NI cRIO (Compact RIO) hardware with serialI/O ports. The cRIO system consists of an inbuilt FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip anda Real-Time (RT) controller which are used for data processing and transmission to a Laptopcomputer with user interface. The program development was done using LabVIEW to create a highfidelity and fast response system. The developed system was tested with simulated signals to validatethe system for long term monitoring application. Finally the Smart Catheter sensors were calibratedwith the calibration function and in-vivo recording was done from a rat's brain. The results of the experiments have been reported in this thesis.

Book excerpt: In the face of pandemic infectious diseases and increasing aging trends, traditional public health systems lack the capacity for real-time monitoring, immediate clinical detection, continuous vital sign monitoring, and the implementation of long-cycle treatment protocols, among other deficiencies. On the basis of the rapid development of wearable electronic devices, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, the future healthcare model will transform from a therapeutic, centralized, passive, and even one-size-fits-all treatment to a new paradigm of proactive, preventive, personalized, customized, and intelligent way. The development of wearable electronics has facilitated the evolution of healthcare from healthcare to biological monitoring, enabling continuous monitoring of critical biomarkers for diagnostic treatment, physiological health monitoring, and assessment. Electronic textiles (e-textiles) are among the rapidly developing wearable electronics in recent years. They have revolutionized the functionality of traditional textiles by incorporating smart attributes, enabling unique and multifunctional applications. Significantly, e-textiles have made notable advancements in the field of personalized healthcare. The article introduces several common e-textiles and their applications in personalized medicines, which also gives a forward-looking outlook on their future growth in infectious diseases, real-time health preventive monitoring, auxiliary therapy, and rehabilitation training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents innovative research regarding the body experience of human individuals who are using assistive robotic devices such as wearable robots or teleoperation systems. The focus is set on human-in-the-loop experiments that help to empirically evaluate how users experience devices. Moreover, these experiments allow for further examination of the underlying mechanisms of body experience through extending existing psychological paradigms, e.g., by disentangling tactile feedback from contacts. Besides reporting and discussing psychological examinations, the influence of various aspects of engineering design is investigated, e.g., different implementations of haptic interfaces or robot control. As haptics are of paramount importance in this tight type of human-robot interaction, it is explored with respect to modality as well as temporal and spatial effects. The first part of the book motivates the research topic and gives an in-depth analysis of the experimental requirements. The second and third part present experimental designs and studies of human-robot body experience regarding the upper and lower limbs as well as cognitive models to predict them. The fourth part discusses a multitude of design considerations and provides directions to guide future research on bidirectional human-machine interfaces and non-functional haptic feedback.
