Zeitreisen sind ein faszinierendes Konzept, das schon seit langem die Vorstellungskraft von Wissenschaftlern, Autoren und Filmemachern gleichermaßen beflügelt. Es geht dabei um die Vorstellung, dass man in die Vergangenheit oder Zukunft reisen kann, um Ereignisse zu ändern oder das Schicksal zu beeinflussen. Aber was sind Zeitreisen eigentlich und wie sind sie möglich? In diesem Essay werden wir uns mit diesen Fragen auseinandersetzen und versuchen, eine klare Vorstellung davon zu bekommen, was Zeitreisen sind und wie sie funktionieren könnten. Der Begriff Zeitreise bezieht sich auf die Vorstellung, dass man sich von einem Zeitpunkt im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum zu einem anderen bewegen kann, ohne dabei dem normalen Fluss der Zeit zu folgen. Mit anderen Worten: Eine Zeitreise würde bedeuten, dass man die Fähigkeit besitzt, die Zeit zu manipulieren und in der Lage ist, zwischen verschiedenen Zeitpunkten zu reisen, als ob man in eine andere Dimension eintaucht. Die Idee der Zeitreise ist seit langem ein fester Bestandteil der Science-Fiction-Literatur und des Films, aber sie hat auch in der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft großes Interesse geweckt. Es gibt zahlreiche Theorien darüber, wie Zeitreisen möglich sein könnten, aber bis heute gibt es keine definitive Antwort auf diese Frage. Eine der bekanntesten Theorien ist die von Albert Einstein entwickelte Relativitätstheorie. Die Relativitätstheorie besagt, dass Raum und Zeit untrennbar miteinander verbunden sind und dass die Krümmung des Raums die Zeitkrümmung beeinflusst. Dies bedeutet, dass die Zeit langsamer oder schneller vergehen kann, je nachdem, wie stark die Gravitationskraft in einem bestimmten Bereich ist.

For better or worse, windshields have become a major frame for viewing the nonhuman world. The view from the road is one of the main ways in which we experience our environments. These vistas are the result of deliberate historical forces, and humans have shaped them as they simultaneously sought to be transformed by them. In Consuming Landscapes, Thomas Zeller explores how what we see while driving reflects how we view our societies and ourselves, the role that consumerism plays in our infrastructure, and ideas about reshaping the environment in the twentieth century. Zeller breaks new ground by comparing the driving experience and the history of landscaped roads in the United States and Germany, two major automotive countries. He focuses specifically on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the United States and the German Alpine Road as case studies. When the automobile was still young, an early twentieth-century group of designers—landscape architects, civil engineers, and planners—sought to build scenic infrastructures, or roads that would immerse drivers in the landscapes that they were traversing. As more Americans and Europeans owned cars and drove them, however, they became less interested in enchanted views; safety became more important than beauty. Clashes between designers and drivers resulted in different visions of landscapes made for automobiles. As strange as it may seem to twenty-first-century readers, many professionals in the early twentieth century envisioned cars and roads, if properly managed, as saviors of the environment. Consuming Landscapes illustrates how the meaning of infrastructures changed as a result of use and consumption. Such changes indicate a deep ambivalence toward the automobile and roads, prompting the question: can cars and roads bring us closer to nature while deeply altering it at the same time?

Dennoch, entgegen der Tendenz zu Zeitmaschinen, existieren verschiedene Vorrichtungen, um eine solche Reise durchzuführen. Diese werden hier an ausgewählten Beispielen in Aussehen und Funktion dargestellt. Nun mag sich die Frage stellen, warum auf die Funktion der Zeitmaschine eingegangen wird, zumal diese schließlich offensichtlich erscheint: Die Funktion der Zeitmaschine ist es, eine Person oder einen Gegenstand aus seiner Zeit in eine andere Zeit, beispielsweise zwei Jahre in die Vergangenheit oder zwei Jahre in die Zukunft, zu befördern. Doch ist mit dieser trivialen Definition die Frage nach der Funktion bei weitem nicht beantwortet.
