Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Reminiscences In connection with my service on the north-western Railway, I have endeavoured to tell the story of the progress of interlocking, the battle of the brakes, the steps taken to insure safe working, and to record in proper sequence the chief occasions of train accelerations for Ireland, Scotland and elsewhere with notes of the introduction of any leading changes in travelling accommodation, and of the extension of facilities by doubling single lines, quadrupling others, and re-arranging and amplifying stations - facts connected with the London and north-western Company's progress which do not exist in any collected form. There appear to be unmistakable indications of radical changes affecting railway working in the near future: the electrifying of the lines superseding the use of steam, the adoption of pneumatic action for working point rods, of electricity not only for actuating points but for automatic signalling, will all bring about marvellous modifications in modes of working, and in the class of knowledge needed by the working staff; it will be for other Superintendents to tell the story of their being brought into uniformity. The supplemental chapters of these Notes refer to the railway journeys made by Her Late Majesty Queen Victoria principally over the London and north-western Line: to glean the facts connected with them commencing as far back as 1843, when the Queen first travelled by the London and Birmingham Railway, has entailed considerable research, not unattended with personal interest, for it has fallen to my lot for many recent years to have had the honour of being in charge of Her Majesty's train to an extent unequalled by any of the Railway officers, whose names are recorded from time to time as having been responsible for the safe conduct of the Queen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railways and Other Ways: Being Reminiscences of Canal and Railway Life During a Period of Sixty-Five Years The last six or seven decades have been fraught with wonderful inventions and discoveries, coming so thick and fast upon each other that the human mind is almost bewildered when it meditates upon them. It is safe to say, however, that nothing has done so much to bring nations together, and to advance the interests of their inhabitants, as those of the Locomotive and the Steamship. The author has watched the rise of these mighty pioneers of civilization from their infancy to their present gigantic growth; and, from his long experience of the carrying industries in both England and Canada, has ventured to make some remarks connected with the management of them, more particularly as regards the movements of freight and freight rates, questions which are frequently being discussed by Governments and the public in all countries. The author's long and intimate connection with the two. Canadian railways, the Grand Trunk and Great Western (now forming one system), since their opening forty years ago, must be stated as a reason for his giving more than ordinary prominence to the sketches and memoirs of the men who have had the manage ment of these railways, and of those who are still the active workers on that of the Grand Trunk, who in most cases have grown from youth to mature age in its service. It makes it the more desirable, perhaps, that the reminiscences of the early Grand Trunk Railway should be recorded, from the fact that many of the documents con useted with its early history were destroyed by the burning of the general offices at Point St. Charles, Montreal, many years ago. The subjoined synopsis of the book, Railways and Other Ways, will give a fair idea of the character of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life Span and Reminiscences of Railway Mail Service In the late Summer of 1908 I wrote a reminiscent article on "The Railway Mail Service," which was published in the September issue of "The Railway Post Office." This article was prepared in response to the request of a large and important association of the splendid men who had served with me, and under my supervision, during part or all of my long career in that most remarkable branch of the civil service of our government. The reminiscences began with my entry into the service - March 5, 1866 - nineteen months after the inauguration of the first railway post office, and when the whole corps of its employees, railway postal clerks, route agents, mail route messengers, and local agents, numbered only 703; and more than a year and a half before the first full railway post office car was placed in service. As I wrote, my memory awoke and presented in the order of time, clear recollections of events with which I was connected in the earliest years of the improved service and they were chronicled so that those who joined the devoted corps later might become familiar with the details of its inception, inauguration and development; the hardships and disadvantages under which the work was performed; the desperate struggle preceding its firm establishment, and the gradual breaking of the clouds between the rifts of which could be seen the coming of the magnificent service of to-day. As the story progressed, the educational methods employed to strengthen the minds and memories of the clerks, to increase the efficiency of their work while its scope was enlarging, and its character becoming more complexed, the system of discipline instituted to insure obedience of orders, instructions, regulations and laws, and thus gain the confidence and support of the public, were introduced and discussed. As well as being a co-founder of the Journal of Transport History, he wrote extensively on a variety of transport-related topics and was instrumental in developing the London Transport and the National Railway museums. Whilst his death in September 2000 at the age of 85 was a sad loss to the world of transport history, the achievements of his life, celebrated in this festschrift, remain a lasting legacy to succeeding generations of scholars in many fields. Concentrating on the theme of the railways, and how they dramatically affected the development of Britain and her society, this collection touches on numerous issues first highlighted by Professor Simmons which are now central to academic study. These include the men who built the railways, those who financed the enterprise, how the railways affected such everyday issues as tourism, the arts, and politics, as well as the lasting legacy of the railways in a country now dominated by the private car. This volume written by former friends, students and colleagues of Professor Simmons reflects these interests, and provides a fitting tribute to one of the truly great British historians of the twentieth century.
