Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supplying basic concepts on electromagnetic wave propagation and radiation, and on asymptotic techniques, employed to study propagation in a complex environment, when obstacles are large concerning wavelength. This book also presents basic models for free-space propagation and propagation over a flat or spherical Earth and some important phenomena involved in wireless propagation in a complex environment are illustrated: multipath, fading and delay spread. It also includes application-oriented portions: available models and tools to predict radio wave propagation in urban areas are presented, and an illustrative example of a ray-tracing solver is provided. The new propagation scenarios arising with 5G telecommunication systems are illustrated, and international and national regulations on exposure of the public to electromagnetic fields are introduced. This resource is great for wireless network engineers, academic and industry researchers, engineers in public administration, and students at the masters level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical book provides fundamentals of electromagnetic wave propagation and its unique application for the design of mobile wireless systems in complex urban environments. It supplies telecommunication engineers with the proper theoretical and practical tools to: plan radio coverage in cellular networks; design a radio link; predict connectivity in a wireless network and ensure that the system to be designed fulfills regulations on exposure of general public to electromagnetic fields. You’ll understand the latest propagation models and be equipped to address the challenges facing wireless propagation for the most recent 5G mobile systems, including how to cope with new propagation scenarios/frequencies in 5G wireless channel modelling. You’ll also find unique coverage of the problems of human exposure to electromagnetic fields and the corresponding international and national regulations, including the most recent ICNIRP guidelines. The book brings theory, algorithms, and applications into focus with some practical examples. Specific attention is devoted to laying the mathematical foundations of the asymptotic techniques that are presented; of the propagation over a flat and spherical Earth; and also of the propagation in complex environment in order to provide a cohesive exposition of the underlying principles. With its strong theoretical background on fundamentals of electromagnetic propagation along with an application-oriented approach, this is a must-have book for researchers working on applied electromagnetics and engineers working on wireless network planning at an advanced level. It is also rich in details and clear, making it an excellent textbook for advanced and graduate-level students.

Book excerpt: Wireless communication is one of the most dynamic and vibrant areas of technology development in the communication field today. It has been found that severe climatic conditions disturb the propagation of electromagnetic signals at higher frequencies (greater than 30 MHz). The disturbance is mainly due to molecular absorption by oxygen for frequencies ranging between 60 and 118 GHz and due to water vapour in 22, 183 and 325 GHz bands. Rain and fog has the most significant impact, since the size of the rain drops is of the order of the wavelength of the transmitted signal. This results in energy absorption by the rain drops themselves, and as a secondary effect energy is scattered by the drops. The frequency selective absorption characteristics of the atmosphere can be approximated by a transfer function. In most of the practical channels when the signal propagates through the atmosphere the effect of many factors on the signal has to be considered along with the free space propagation channel assumption. The main objective of this study is, therefore, to find out whether, and how, the different climatic conditions are influencing radio wave propagation in GSM frequency bands in general and in Narnaul, Haryana (India) in particular. To carry out this investigation, the records of radio wave propagation along with path loss during different climatic conditions have been analyzed. On the strength of these analyses, a propagation path loss model has been developed by proposing suitable correction factors due to different climatic conditions. The validation of this developed path loss model has been verified by taking reference models and by applying practically in different urban areas. The effect of these climatic conditions on the link budget has also been analyzed.

Book excerpt: Mobile systems operate in a variety of different scenarios. These include remote rural areas, where the terrain is irregular, dense urban areas where buildings dominate, and even inside those buildings. Equipment can either be carried by pedestrians or be in a high-speed vehicle or train. Various alternative methods of predicting the mean signal strength and its variability are surveyed and their applicability to a particular situation is discussed. Ray-tracing methods are introduced in connection with indoor propagation. Multipath, probably the single most destructive influence on mobile syst.
