Book excerpt: In practicing anatomic pathology, the pathology report is a reflection of the pathologist’s competence, based on the precision and accuracy involved in finalizing it. Although designing comprehensive quality system policies and procedures at the department level would appear to be the logical approach in the right direction, precision & accuracy may not be easy to achieve due to various factors. While there can be no doubt that the data provided by practitioners of anatomic pathology is highly relevant and valuable to the practice of evidence based medicine in the clinical arena one would do well to keep in mind that the knowledge base in this speciality is predominantly observational; which can create a butterfly effect in clinical outcome. Clinical practitioners play an essential role in error reduction through several avenues such as effective test ordering, providing accurate and pertinent clinical information, procuring high-quality specimens, providing timely follow-up on test results, effectively communicating on potentially discrepant diagnoses, and advocating second opinions on the pathology diagnosis in specific situations. This is indeed the right time to consider a re-look into the functioning of our anatomic pathology departments; Multidisciplinary approach is ideal way forward in analyzing our final Diagnosis.

Book excerpt: The majority of studies on the quality of oncologic pathology diagnoses have focused on patient safety and have documented a variety of causes of errors that occur in the clinical and anatomic pathology department testing phases. This is indeed the right time to consider a re-look into the functioning of our anatomic pathology departments, especially in light of litigation threats looming large over today's medical practice. Although designing comprehensive quality system policies and procedures at the department level would appear to be the logical approach in the right direction, precision & accuracy may not be easy to achieve due to various factors. An interdisciplinary approach would be mandatory to formulate effective treatment plans to resolve the pressing problems in medical science, particularly cancer management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 8 years since the publication of the first edition of Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, great strides have been made in our understanding of diseases and neoplastic processes. Many clinically important new histopathologic entities have been described or more fully defined in virtually every organ. Numerous clinically important diagnostic and prognostic markers have entered routine practice. Genetic testing for the early detection of cancers and the molecular classification of diseases has become increasingly important. This is an age of enlightenment in surgical pathology, and the authors of this new volume have captured this sense of excitement herein. This much praised and widely used reference manual on has been extensively revised and expanded to cover the entire field of anatomic pathology. The Third Edition features the incorporation of full-color images in the text with updates of new diagnostic and prognostic information. New classifications and numerous new entities and histologic variants are fully explored. Useful immunostaining biomarkers and emerging molecular targets and relevant molecular findings that have emerged from recent genomic studies are incorporated in each chapter. Written by internationally recognized authorities, the comprehensive, evidence-based practice information is presented in an outline format that is clear and easy to follow. Up-to-date and richly detailed, Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, Third Edition offers both the pathologist-in-training and the practicing pathologist a concise summary of all the critical information needed to recognize, understand and interpret anatomic pathology.

Book excerpt: Multimedia information and digital images are increasingly important in the field of healthcare, but establishing an adequate technological framework for their management, and workable international standards to ensure compatibility and interoperability, are crucial if they are to be employed effectively. This book presents the main research efforts of EURO-TELEPATH, an initiative of the European Corporation in Science and Technology (COST) Action, IC0604. This program began in November 2007, and ran until November 2011. Its aim was to develop the standards and solutions necessary to represent, interpret, browse and retrieve digital medical images, while preserving their diagnostic quality for clinical purposes, education and research. At the end of the project, the most relevant researchers in the field of digital pathology u many of whom had been active members of EURO-TELEPATH u were asked to contribute to a book which would compile the main research efforts of the European COST Action consortium. The book is divided into six parts. The first is an introduction to the instruments and activities of COST.This is followed by sections dealing with: the state-of-the-art in pathology; pathology business modeling; standards and specifications in pathology; the analysis, processing, retrieval and management of images; technology and automation in pathology; and strategic developments and emerging research. As well as being a comprehensive overview of the IC0604 COST program, the book includes a selection of papers from American and Japanese researchers working in the same field.

The text first describes good laboratory practices, including quality management, design control of tests, and FDA guidelines for laboratory-developed tests, and preclinical validation study designs. The second focus of the book is on best practices for staffing and training, including cost of testing, staffing requirements, process improvement using Six Sigma techniques, training and competency guidelines, and complete training programs for cytogenetic and molecular genetic technologists. The third part of the text provides stepwise standard operating procedures for chromosomal, FISH and microarray-based tests, including preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic steps in testing, which are divided into categories by specimen type and test type. All three sections of the book include example worksheets, procedures, and other illustrative examples that can be downloaded from the Wiley website to be used directly without having to develop prototypes in your laboratory. Providing a wealth of information on both laboratory management and molecular and cytogenetic testing, Cytogenetic Laboratory Management will be an essential tool for laboratorians worldwide in the field of laboratory testing and genetic testing in particular. This book gives the essentials of: Developing and implementing good quality management programs in laboratories Understanding design control of tests and preclinical validation studies and reports FDA guidelines for laboratory-developed tests Use of reagents, instruments, and equipment Cost of testing assessment and process improvement using Six Sigma methodology Staffing training and competency objectives Complete training programs for molecular and cytogenetic technologists Standard operating procedures for all components of chromosomal analysis, FISH, and microarray testing of different specimen types This volume is a companion to Cytogenetic Abnormalities: Chromosomal, FISH and Microarray-Based Clinical Reporting.
