Book excerpt: A method for determining the subsonic aerodynamic interference between a planar wing with pylons and a single axisymmetric body has been developed and evaluated. The wing and body solutions were obtained independently using a simple horseshoe vortex system and a three-dimensional point source distribution, respectively. A vortex image system based on the two-dimensional theory of images was then added to the body to maintain the tangent-flow boundary condition in the non-uniform wing flow field. Both the influence of the vortex image system within the body and the body flow field effects at the wing were evaluated. No significant change in the wing vortex strength distribution resulted so that it was unnecessary to iterate the isolated wing solution. The theoretical results for incompressible flow were compared with pressure distributions obtained from low-speed wind tunnel tests of the wing-body configuration. The correlation was generally good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A detailed account and interpretation of a series of visions conducted between August 22, 1975 and February 5, 1977. Their purpose was to explore the Pylons of the Duant, or "Starry Abode," first inscribed upon the alabaster coffin of 19th Dynasty Egyptian Pharoah, Seti I. To the ancient Egyptians, the Duant was the place where the sun god Ra made his nocturnal journey through the underworld--which was divided into twelve hours. The Egyptian "Book of Pylons" describes a perilous journey where the Gate of each hour is protected by a fearsome guardian or "watcher" who prevents entry by the unworthy, or revelation of the deepest secrets of the netherworld to those allowed to pass. In modern Jungian psychology terms, the Duant is a representation of the Unconscious of mankind, the "underworld," inhabited by gods and daemons, the living symbols called primordial images or Archetypes. The noctural journey of Ra is thus actually a journey deep within the human soul or Ba. The author's study of the ancient texts led him to suspect that these Pylons were also hidden gateways to the higher planes of the Tree of Life, possibly including secret entrances to the Thirty Aethyrs as described by Elizbethan magician John Dee"--

Book excerpt: Roger Shumann, a 1920s barnstorming pilot, parachuters Laverne and Jack, and their mechanic, Jiggs, live fast and hard, without thought to the consequences their actions have on their fellow pilots and their families. Rumours of their incest and rampant alcoholism attract the attention of a local newspaperman—known only as The Reporter—who is pulled into the their circle and forced to confront the tragic realisation that he, too, has moved beyond the constraints of human morality. One of the few novels by William Faulkner to take place outside of fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Pylon was originally published in 1935, and is now regarded as an important meditation on the loss of human values in the face of modernity. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1978, the B-52's conquered the New York underground. A year later, the band's self-titled debut album burst onto the Billboard charts, capturing the imagination of fans and music critics worldwide. The fact that the group had formed in the sleepy southern college town of Athens, Georgia, only increased the fascination. Soon, more Athens bands followed the B-52's into the vanguard of the new American music that would come to be known as "alternative," including R.E.M., who catapulted over the course of the 1980s to the top of the musical mainstream. As acts like the B-52's, R.E.M., and Pylon drew the eyes of New York tastemakers southward, they discovered in Athens an unexpected mecca of music, experimental art, DIY spirit, and progressive politics--a creative underground as vibrant as any to be found in the country's major cities. In Athens in the eighties, if you were young and willing to live without much money, anything seemed possible. Cool Town reveals the passion, vitality, and enduring significance of a bohemian scene that became a model for others to follow. Grace Elizabeth Hale experienced the Athens scene as a student, small-business owner, and band member. Blending personal recollection with a historian's eye, she reconstructs the networks of bands, artists, and friends that drew on the things at hand to make a new art of the possible, transforming American culture along the way. In a story full of music and brimming with hope, Hale shows how an unlikely cast of characters in an unlikely place made a surprising and beautiful new world.
