But, there is a severe limitation in the number of discriminably different stimuli that they can process at one time. George Miller argued that they can handle no more than seven, plus or minus two independent pieces of information at any given time. Thus, necessarily they must develop ways to simplify the task of processing the information that exists in their environment. They do this in many ways. One way is to select the stimuli that are most imp- tant in their lives, what are often called values. Another way is to chunk stimuli by linking them to each other, so they form bundles of stimuli that can be processed as if they are one entity. Generalized expectancies of what is linked with what are beliefs, and these beliefs are structured into bundles (see Triandis, 1972).

He worked with us in clinical pediatric cardiology and in our animal physiology laboratory for the next three years. He was the most productive individual in the history of our training program, publishing seven papers in those three years, four clinical papers and three involving pulsed ultrasonic flowmeters and implanted ultrasonic displacement devices in animals. The work, from laboratory to publication, was always done with the utmost attention to accuracy, and was well developed conceptually. Although English was not his native language, Jean's mastery of English was not only excellent, I felt that he actually communicated better than many of our native physicians. During the past year, I was delighted to learn that Jean was preparing a textbook on pediatric echocardiography with Dr. van Dorp, and was even more pleased to be asked to write a foreword .. However, the greatest pleasure came from actually reading this book, and finding that it does indeed have a unique approach, and with the additional genuine benefit to the reader of a thorough, consistent, segmental approach to the diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

Naturalness theory has been challenged on the grounds that little of its supporting developmental and experimental research has drawn on participants from predominantly secular cultural environments. Given China’s official secularity, its large proportion of atheists, and its alleged long history of dominant, nonreligious philosophies, can any broad claim for religion’s psychological “naturalness” be plausible? Addressing this empirical gap, the studies discussed in this volume support core naturalness theory predictions for human reasoning about supernatural agency, intelligent design, the efficacy of rituals, and vitalistic causality.
