En la primera parte queda reflejada su maestría a partir de tres escritos que, a nuestro entender, conforman su particular aporte a la conformación de una epistemología psicosocial. Vista su trayectoria intelectual, no cabe duda de que esa fue su verdadera vocación: sentar las bases, remontándose a los pensadores de la Grecia clásica, de una psicología social de la ciencia y del conocimiento. Lo hizo a su estilo: a regañadientes, de manera dispersa y minimalista. Lástima, porque reunía todas las condiciones (sólido bagaje filosófico, sociológico y psicológico, saludable indiferencia frente a las urgencias del impacto, y tiempo). Pero nunca creyó que tuviera algo que decir a este respecto; por eso guardó un respetuoso silencio, que tanto choca con quienes y escribimos sin tregua con independencia de que se tenga algo que decir. Le sobraban, pues, los motivos para dejarnos un legado algo más sistemático capaz de ofrecer algo de claridad en este camino tan enredado de esquinas y vueltas. A pesar de ello, creemos que los escritos que aquí reeditamos pueden ser considerados como la principal aportación hecha desde la psicología social española a la teoría del conocimiento. La segunda parte de esta monografía, el Epílogo, intenta descubrir la persona que se esconde detrás del pensador, del profesor, del académico y muestra al amigo incondicional que fue de quienes tuvimos la suerte de ser considerados como tal, al mentor comprometido que se batió el cobre cuando fue preciso, al conversador ocurrente e ingenioso, al personaje, en fin, salido de las entrañas de su tierra manchega. Aunque no están todos los que son, todos los que estamos en el Epílogo disponemos de las suficientes credenciales para ello. Y, más allá de quienes figuran en uno u otro lugar (una mera anécdota), esta monografía es obra de todos los que estamos. Why should we deal with ordinary things? People’s life is made of everyday practical, taken-for-granted things, such as driving a car, using money, listening music, etc. When you drive from home to workplace, you are migrating between contexts. Is this an empty space you are crossing, or the time you spend into the car is something meaningful? In psychological terms, things have, at least, three levels of existence, a material, a symbolic and an affective one. The underlying idea is that the symbolic elaboration of everyday things is characterized by the transcendence of the particular object-sign, leading to the creation of more and more complex sign fields. These fields expand according to an inclusive logic up to dialogically and dialectically incorporate opposites (i.e. clean/dirty, transparent/opaque, hide/ show, join/divide, slow/fast, etc.). Even the meaning of “ordinary” and “extraordinary” follow such an inclusive logic: if you give a positive value to ordinary, extraordinary is rule-breaking; otherwise, if ordinary means trivial, extraordinary assumes a positive value. Besides, things are cultural artifacts mediating the experience of the world, the psychological processes and the construction of mind. Reflecting upon “things” is thus a more meaningful pathway to understand Psyche.

This volume proposes a radical new way of answering this question. It rests on a non-representational theory of knowledge on how to approach and understand the self and action more broadly. Although it has never been lost, the Aristotelian emphasis on excellence in moral character and practical reason as preconditions for achieving happiness has gradually been degraded. This book suggests that this has happened thanks to a split between knowledge and action that can be traced back to the origins of modernity. Modern academic disciplines in general, and psychology in particular, are based on the idealisation of theoretical, hypothetical and abstract reason, suggesting that this morally neutral ideal must guide human action. This volume systematically integrates those domains in a more profound and meaningful proposal, relevant for current times and challenges. Based on previous research bridging philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, the contributors here identify two alternative paradigms for conceiving of the self and human development: the so-called “autonomous self” (AS) and the “inter-processual self” (IPS). The book considers the person as an ethical being and as the foundational cornerstone of a new theory of self, action and knowing that achieves decisive distance from modern theory’s limitations. To keep on-going dialogue on human development open, the authors introduce a new theoretical model (IPS) which can be scientifically measured and tested; they also suggest its further application in concrete, practical realms, thus touching on how the adoption of the IPS paradigm inspires a renewed view of human cognition, education, governance, and business management.
