Book excerpt: Too much current flowing through an electric circuit can damage the circuit and can create a safety hazard. How much current is "too much current"? That depends on the circuit and its components. For some circuits, 1 ampere would be too much current, while for other circuits 1 ampere would be perfectly acceptable. Circuit protection devices protect electrical equipment by rapidly disconnecting power to components in the event of an abnormal overload conditions resulting from excessive voltages, ground faults, and accidental shorting of a circuit. Two types of circuit protection devices are common; fuses and circuit breakers both operate by opening and interrupting current to the circuit. A fuse or circuit breaker is designed to create an open circuit if too much current flows through it. You can think of it as a switch that automatically turns itself off if the current through it exceeds a certain level. When a fuse is "blown" by having too much current pass through it, the fuse is ruined and must be replaced. On the other hand, when a circuit breaker is "tripped" by excessive current, the circuit breaker can be reset and used again, instead of being discarded. The choice of which to use depends on the specific application, circuit type, its electrical specifications, space available, environmental constraints, and customer preference. In the US, the National Electric Code (NEC) exists to guide electricians in the proper installation of electrical equipment and defines the specific requirements for circuit protection. In Canada the Canadian Electric Code (CEC) exists to provide similar guidance. Other areas of the world have equivalent country or local codes.A proper circuit protection strategy reduces long-term maintenance needs and other costs, and minimizes system downtime. This 3-hr Quick Book provides an overview of circuit protection devices and is based entirely on Naval Education and Training Materials (NAVEDTRA 14175), Electricity and Electronic Training Series; Module-3 and covers Chapter 2 titled “Circuit Protection Devices”. This course is aimed at students, professional engineers, service technicians, energy auditors, operational & maintenance personnel, facility engineers and general audience. At the conclusion of this course, the reader will be able to:• State the reasons why circuit protection is needed.• Define a direct short, an excessive current condition, and an excessive heat condition.• State the way in which circuit protection devices are connected in a circuit.• Identify two types of circuit protection devices and learn their types and characteristics.• List the three time delay ratings of circuit breakers.• Define selective tripping and state why it is used.• Identify the factors used in selecting circuit breakers.• List the methods of checking and the items to check when replacing and/or maintaining fuses and circuit breakers.

Book excerpt: ESD Protection Device and Circuit Design for Advanced CMOS Technologies is intended for practicing engineers working in the areas of circuit design, VLSI reliability and testing domains. As the problems associated with ESD failures and yield losses become significant in the modern semiconductor industry, the demand for graduates with a basic knowledge of ESD is also increasing. Today, there is a significant demand to educate the circuits design and reliability teams on ESD issues. This book makes an attempt to address the ESD design and implementation in a systematic manner. A design procedure involving device simulators as well as circuit simulator is employed to optimize device and circuit parameters for optimal ESD as well as circuit performance. This methodology, described in ESD Protection Device and Circuit Design for Advanced CMOS Technologies has resulted in several successful ESD circuit design with excellent silicon results and demonstrates its strengths.

This book was released on 1992-12-31 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ready reference provides electrical engineers with practical information on accurate methods for measuring signals and noise in electronic circuits as well as methods for locating and reducing high frequency noise generated by circuits or external interference. Engineers often find that measuring and mitigating high frequency noise signals in electronic circuits can be problematic when utilizing common measurement methods. Demonstrating the innovative solutions he developed as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at AT&T/Bell Laboratories, solutions which earned him numerous U.S. and foreign patents, Douglas Smith has written the most definitive work on this subject. Smith explains design problems related to the new high frequency electronic standards, and then systematically provides laboratory proven methods for making accurate noise measurements, while demonstrating how these results should be interpreted. The technical background needed to conduct these experiments is provided as an aid to the novice, and as a reference for the professional. Smith also discusses theoretical concepts as they relate to practical applications. Many of the techniques Smith details in this book have been previously unpublished, and have been proven to solve problems in hours rather than in the days or weeks of effort it would take conventional techniques to yield results. Comprehensive and informative, this volume provides detailed coverage of such areas as: scope probe impedance, grounding, and effective bandwidth, differential measurement techniques, noise source location and identification, current probe characteristics, operation, and applications, characteristics of sources of interference to measurements and the minimization of their effects, minimizing coupling of external noise into the equipment under test by measurements, estimating the effect of a measurement on equipment operation, using digital scopes for single shot noise measurements, prediction of equipment electromagnetic interference (EMI) emission and susceptibility of performance, null experiments for validating measurement data, the relationship between high frequency noise and final product reliability. With governmental regulations and MIL standards now governing the emission of high frequency electronic noise and the susceptibility to pulsed EMI, the information presented in this guide is extremely pertinent. Electrical engineers will find High Frequency Measurements and Noise in Electronic Circuits an essential desktop reference for information and solutions, and engineering students will rely on it as a virtual source book for deciphering the "mysteries" unique to high frequency electronic circuits.

Book excerpt: As we increasingly use electronic devices to direct our daily lives, so grows our dependence on reliable energy sources to power them. Because modern electronic systems demand steady, efficient, reliable DC voltage sources—often at a sub-1V level—commercial AC lines, batteries, and other common resources no longer suffice. New technologies also require intricate techniques to protect against natural and manmade disasters. Still, despite its importance, practical information on this critical subject remains hard to find. Using simple, accessible language to balance coverage of theoretical and practical aspects, DC Power Supplies, Power Management and Surge Protection details the essentials of power electronics circuits applicable to low-power systems, including modern portable devices. A summary of underlying principles and essential design points, it compares academic research and industry publications and reviews DC power supply fundamentals, including linear and low-dropout regulators. Content also addresses common switching regulator topologies, exploring resonant conversion approaches. Coverage includes other important topics such as: Control aspects and control theory Digital control and control ICs used in switching regulators Power management and energy efficiency Overall power conversion stage and basic protection strategies for higher reliability Battery management and comparison of battery chemistries and charge/discharge management Surge and transient protection of circuits designed with modern semiconductors based on submicron dimension transistors This specialized design resource explores applicable fundamental elements of power sources, with numerous cited references and discussion of commercial components and manufacturers. Regardless of their previous experience level, this information will greatly aid designers, researchers, and academics who, study, design, and produce the viable new power sources needed to propel our modern electronic world.
