Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the area of unpaced, unbalanced production lines. You will find an up-to-date discussion of how designing these lines can be made more efficient by taking advantage of inherent imbalance -- for example operators who work at different speeds- a concept which has traditionally been seen as an obstacle to efficient production. A series of experiments are presented to illustrate the issues involved in improving performance through production line imbalance. This area is of interest to postgraduate and executive level students interested in the area of production, and to managers of manual or semi-automated production lines who are interested in innovative approaches to line design. In this book you will find some surprisingly easy ways to improve performance with low or zero costs. Emphasis is placed on reducing the amount of time production lines lie idle, and on reducing work in process. This is a timely contribution to the field when managers are casting around for new ways to cut waste and reduce their use of natural resources.

Inside this book, you will learn new designs for these lines that can lead to more efficiency by taking advantage of inherent imbalance—for example, operators who work at different speeds—a concept that has traditionally been seen as an obstacle to efficient production. The authors have included a series of experiments that illustrate the issues involved in improving performance through production line imbalance, as well as some surprisingly easy ways to improve performance with low or zero costs. Emphasis is placed on reducing the amount of time production lines lie idle, and on reducing work in process. This is a timely contribution to the field when managers are casting around for new ways to cut waste and reduce their use of natural resources.

Book excerpt: A valuable tool for establishing and maintaining system reliability, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) has proven to be very effective in reducing unscheduled downtime for companies around the world. So much so that OEE is quickly becoming a requirement for improving quality and substantiating capacity in leading organizations, as well as a required area of study for the ISO/TS 16949. Breaking down the methodology from a historical perspective, The OEE Primer: Understanding Overall Equipment Effectiveness, Reliability, and Maintainability explores the overall effectiveness of machines and unveils novel methods that focus on design improvement—including hazard analysis, rate of change of failure (ROCOF) analysis, failure rate finite element analysis (FEA), and theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). It covers loss of effectiveness, new machinery, electrical maintenance issues, Weibull distribution, measurement techniques, and mechanical and electrical reliability. The book also: Discusses Reliability and Maintainability (R&M), not as tools to be used in specific tasks, rather as a discipline Covers the application of OEE as an overall improvement tool Assesses existing and new equipment from classical, reliability, and maintainability perspectives Includes downloadable resources with more than 100 pages of appendices and additional resources featuring statistical tables, outlines, case studies, guidelines, and standards Introducing the classical approach to improvement, this book provides an understanding of exactly what OEE is and how it can be best applied to address capacity issues. Highlighting mechanical and electrical opportunities throughout, the text includes many tables, forms, and examples that clearly illustrate and enhance the material presented.

Book excerpt: The paper aims at enhancing the efficiency of a production line, thereby improving the performance of the operator. A detailed layout of the production line is drawn and time study is conducted to arrive at a standard time for various operations. Line balancing methodology is adopted to balance the production line. Further with the help of method study procedure and time study techniques, cycle time of the production line is identified. Pitch diagram is drawn to identify critical operation in the production line. After analyzing the pitch diagram, various bottlenecks in the production line are identified. This includes high cycle time and uneven work assignments for individual operators. By using seven quality control tools and line balancing techniques, bottlenecks in the production line are reduced, and unnecessary movement of man and material is reduced significantly by redesigning the layout. Further, an increase in production rate and reduction in overall production cost of garments is achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the latest findings on the design and optimization of production lines. The “Fourth Industrial Revolution” (alternatively known as “Industry 4.0”) supports innovative models for energy consumption and fault tolerance in automated lines, and this drives changes in the design and optimization models of production lines. The goal is to collect a series of works that can summarize the latest trends in the field of production line optimization models in order to improve the responsiveness of automated lines to failures, reduce energy consumption and peak electricity demand, and develop other methods to support robust and sustainable production lines.
