Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of acquisition reform is not only to obtain a better product for the Department of Defense (DoD), but also to improve or innovate the actual process of acquiring defense systems and services. This thesis critically analyzes the DoD service contracting process with a focus on innovation through alpha contracting as a redesign enabler. Service contracting is increasingly important as the DOD shifts to contractor support with the many unique characteristics requiring special attention that service contracting entails. Data gathered from field research and interviews are employed to support comparative process analysis of eight service contracting process flows. Innovation analysis of these eight processes is employed to redesign the service contracting process through alpha contracting. Both positive implications and potential inhibitors to alpha contracting are discussed, as well as mechanisms to overcome the inhibitors. To generalize the results of this research, a decision model is developed to assist acquisition managers in assessing the likelihood of alpha contracting success. The thesis concludes that alpha contracting can innovate the service contracting process and offers suggestions for future research along these lines.

Book excerpt: Process innovation pertains to making dramatic improvements in performance of enterprise processes. Stemming from total quality management, business process reengineering and other widely-accepted approaches to performance improvement in the business enterprise, process innovation has largely been practiced without a systematic method and required expertise only possessed by a few, highly-talented people. Now, as the result of research in this area, the process of process innovation now has a systematic method that helps ensure consistent and thorough analysis, and through measurement-driven reasoning, an automated tool now exists to enable the relative amateur to innovate enterprise processes as well as the professional. Moreover, process innovation is no longer the exclusive domain of business enterprises, as military, governmental and other organizational processes can be innovated with equivalent efficacy using the method and tool described in this book. In particular, the contracting process lends itself to process innovation and is addressed explicitly in this book.

Book excerpt: A complete guide to managing technical issues and procuring third-party resources The Wiley Guides to the Management of Projects address critical, need-to-know information that will help professionals successfully manage projects in most businesses and help students learn the best practices of the industry. They contain not only well-known and widely used basic project management practices but also the newest and most cutting-edge concepts in the broader theory and practice of managing projects. This fourth volume in the series offers expert guidance on the supply chain and delivery cycle of the project, as well as the technology management issues that are involved such as modeling, design, and verification. Technology within the context of the management of projects involves not so much actually doing the "technical" elements of the project as managing the processes and practices by which projects are transformed from concepts into actual entities-and doing this effectively within the time, cost, strategic, and other constraints on the project. The contributors to this volume, among the most recognized international leaders in the field, guide you through the key life-cycle issues that define the project, ensure its viability, manage requirements, and track changes-highlighting the key steps along the way in transforming and realizing the technical definition of the project. Complete your understanding of project management with these other books in The Wiley Guides to the Management of Projects series: * The Wiley Guide to Project Control * The Wiley Guide to Project, Program & Portfolio Management * The Wiley Guide to Project Organization & Project Management Competencies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After almost twenty years of internationalization, Chinese firms have shown their growing innovation capability through benefiting from global networks and domestic efforts. However, how Chinese firm innovation is facilitated at the international and domestic levels remains to be understood. This book investigates innovation in China from three aspects. First, starting at the international level, the effects of Chinese–foreign linkages in innovation are examined from the relationship view and the foreign ownership perspective. Second, before moving to the domestic level, the moderating role of global networks (e.g., global supply chain collaboration) is examined to understand the relationship between competition of unregistered firms and innovation of registered firms. Third, at the domestic level, innovation is studied from both upstream and downstream of the value chain: consumers’ decision-making in innovative products and strategic choices, and environment constraints for product innovation. Collectively, this book actively investigates innovation in China at international and domestic levels. It investigates how the global networks contribute to innovation in China and how domestic Chinese firms strengthen their innovation capability. The volume, thus, makes an important attempt to extend existing knowledge on this subject and provides new insights to scholars and practitioners. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of International Studies of Management & Organization.
