Von Tobel explores the reasonsbehind prison ministry and the process of getting started. His tried-and-true advice and clear action steps help you launch and grow a prison ministry-but for that ministry to thrive, you need boots on the ground. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any mission team. With over fifteen hundred volunteers active world-wide, Von Tobel knows from experience just how critical volunteers are to the prison ministry. He's learned that those in leadership must look inward to the health of the team before working outward effectively. Now, in part 2 of his basic training guide, he teaches you how to recruit, train, and govern your volunteers. As you work through these three major categories, you'll discover the biblical importance of delegating responsibility, what to look for in a good volunteer, how to establish a code of conduct, when and how to split a growing team, and wise tips for fostering team unity. An established veteran in prison outreach, Von Tobel has managed a host of unique, diverse individuals throughout his thirty-plus-year career. Learn from his successes-and failures!-as you build and disciple your own prison-ministry team.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Texas Prison Scams Religion exposes corruption in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, especially in the abuse of religion. In many ways, this book is a literature review of 1,800-plus works that defends freedom of conscience in prison while exposing the unconstitutionality of the seminary program that “buys faith with favor” from prisoners. The state veritably ordains the prisoner a “Field Minister” that represents the offices of the Governor, TDCJ Director, and wardens throughout the prison. Therein, TDCJ lies about neutrality in a program all about Christian missions and lies again in falsely certifying elementary Bible students as counselors. Why is the director sponsoring psychopaths counseling psychopaths? In fact, TDCJ pays $314 million a year to UTMB for psychiatric care and receives not a single report of the care given, and worse, for UTMB generates no reports itself. The underbelly TDCJ’s executive culture of cover up is exposed. TDCJ has hired the lowest qualified of the applicant pool many times in the last 25 years and regularly destroys statistics on violence. TDCJ Dir. Collier led the prison to model Louisiana Warden Burl Cain, the most scandal-ridden in penal history according to a host of published news stories for 20 years. Therein, Collier led TDCJ to favor the smallest segment of religious society within Evangelical Dominionism. Texas has no business endorsing the truth of any religion over another. We close with a proposal that utilizes the 400,000,000 hours of officer contact over ten years as a definitive influence in contrast to a commissioner that spends less than 10 minutes on each decision. Maness has been lobbying Austin for 15 years to definitively access staff for his “100,000 Mothers’ 1% Certainty Parole Texas Constitutional Amendment,” which would revolutionize prison culture and save Texans millions of the dollars.

Book excerpt: A traveler's guide for Christians to a foreign land where the fields are ripe for harvest. For most Christians, prison culture is like visiting a foreign land, and the thought of ministering behind bars with those incarcerated is an intimidating prospect. Prison Ministry w ill o ffer you t he empowerment you need as a volunteer, chaplain, pastor, or lay leader in doing effective prison ministry.Of the former edition, the late Charles Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries, wrote: "This may well be the definitive book on prison ministry. Fascinating insights about the prison culture and how to reach it. Mandatory reading for everyone incorrections and for Christians who care about the command to visit prison."Providing a thorough "inside-out" view of prison life, Lennie Spitale offers a unique and qualifying vantage for writing about prison culture and prison ministry. As a young man, Spitale was incarcerated several times. Two years after his conversion to Christianity, he began conducting a weekly Bible study in a local jail. This led to full-time prison ministry.Prison Ministry covers areas such as: the emotional challenges of the incarcerated, the environment of fear, the culture of deprivation, friendships, guidelines, dos and don'ts, and many other relevant and essential topics forequipping any individual or church for effective prison ministry.
