Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for this volume lies in Edisbury's Practical Hints for Absorption Spectrometry which was published 17 years ago. Dr Edisbury was a founding member of the Photoelectric Spectrometry Group, served as its first Secretary and edited the Bulletin for many years. His wisdom, humour and pragmatism was evident in early meetings of the Group and in the first issues of the Bulletin, and these qualities were distilled in the writing of Practical Hints. In 1977, the Committee of the Group, which by then had been re-named The UV Spectrometry Group, decided to make use of the expertise available amongst the members of the Group in writing some monographs on the practice of UV and visible spectrometry. Working parties were set up which formulated and produced the first two volumes of the series on Standards in Absorption Spectrometry and Standards in Fluorescence Spectrometry. The success of these volumes lead the present Committee of the Group to set up a new Working Party in 1981 to plan a modern version of Edisbury's book. The idea really caught fire' at the first meeting of the Working Party, when ideas sufficient to fill ten vol umes were put forward. We would not pretend to emulate Edisbury's unique style, but hoped to produce a readable book for the newcomer to UV -visible absorption spectrometry, and perhaps to improve the technique of more experienced users.

Book excerpt: "The principle objective of this handbook is to provide a readily accessible source of information on the major fields of spectroscopy. Specifically, these fields are NMR, IR, Raman, UV (absorption and fluorescence), ESCA, X-Ray (absorption diffraction fluorescence), mass spectrometry, atomic absorption, flame photometry, emission spectrography, and flame spectroscopy. It will be of particular use to analytical, organic, inorganic chemists or spectroscopists wishing to identify materials or compounds. The book will indicate to them which techniques may provide useful information and what kind of information will and will not be provided. In short, it will be a companion to those spectroscopists who have need to broaden their horizons into the major fields discussed."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of the concentrations of molecules in samples has long been an important application of spectroscopy. In the last 20 years advances in algorithms, computers, instruments, and software have led to a growing interest in this field. These developments mean samples and analytes that were once considered intractable are increasingly yielding usable calibrations. The purpose of this book is to give readers, without an advanced math background, a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of modern quantitative spectroscopic analysis. The author has placed great emphasis on providing the reader with everything they need to know to obtain a fundamental understanding of quantitative spectroscopy. · Relevant theory is explained in an easy to understand, conversational style. · Actual spectroscopic data and calibrations are used throughout the book to show how real world calibrations are achieved. · The complexities of Factor Analysis (PCR/PLS) algorithms are explained in pictures and words, making them understandable for all. · Written from a spectroscopic rather than a mathematical point of view. · Relevant theory is interspersed with practical discussions in order to make difficult concepts easier to comprehend · It is a comprehensive introduction for novices, and an excellent reference for experts. · Topics on spectroscopy are included to emphasize its importance in quantitative spectroscopy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging review of modern techniques in atomic and molecular spectroscopy. A brief description of atomic and molecular structure is followed by the relevant energy structure expressions. A discussion of radiative properties and the origin of spectra leads into coverage of X-ray and photoelectron spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, and radiofrequency and microwave techniques. The treatment of laser spectroscopy investigates various tunable sources and a wide range of techniques characterized by high sensitivity and high resolution. Throughout this book, the relation between fundamental and applied aspects is shown, in particular by descriptions of applications to chemical analysis, photochemistry, surface characterisation, environmental and medical diagnostics, remote sensing and astrophysics.
