Book excerpt: Potholes in my lawn: "the book" finally... was inspired by the wonderful children I had the honor of producing 50 minute groups for, for the last five years of my life. The 50 minute therapeutic groups were supposed to be quick, brief and to the point, discussing the client's day to day feelings, but of course things like that get dull quickly for young troubled youth (behaviorally and emotionally) and for the child at heart therapist who's in charge of planning, running and illustrating the groups. Over the course of the last five years I have planned, implemented and conducted over 700 groups and some were beautiful, some confusing but all were fun and a learning experience. As time passed my understanding of a troubled youth's wants and needs became more understandable. Finally I understood rarely does a child want to discuss problems on a Monday morning, they would much rather talk about their weekend and how much fun it was or should have been, rarely does a child want to hug and greet a person whom he or she just met. I learned through the course of time, that yes they want the world to know that they have been hurt, betrayed, misunderstood, misguided, but that they still want love. They want to drive over and pass their potholes on the road to success. Over the last five years I've learned enough to write ten books or more on giving therapeutic groups alone, but instead I settled on giving you 182 of the best, most favorite and most needed groups for a complete school year (of an average 182 day school year), but the groups where designed to be used at any setting/place for the help and assistance with adolescents and teens. Many of the most prized groups I thought of keeping a secret from the rest of the world, but then thought if the groups were that much of a benefit for the CARE clients/children that maybe they could possibly aid and assist the other million plus troubled youth of the world and the facilitators that sometimes run out of ideas like I did on many occasions. The groups of "potholes in my lawn": were not only rated the best and most favorite from the clients, but through therapeutic observations of the 700 groups, the groups that were presented were the most effective in helping to change lives.

Book excerpt: Race, Africana Communication, and Criminal Justice Reform: A Reflexive and Intersectional Analysis of Adaptive Vitality discusses issues and themes surrounding communication, social media, online protests, policing, criminal justice reform, and freedom of speech. Honoring the legacy of Dr. James Conyers, this volume offers analyses grounded in Africana praxis and communication principles that embrace social justice and challenge systems based on race, arguing for the importance of establishing networks of communication that benefit all people. Collectively, these interdisciplinary chapters extend the research on race at the intersections of social media and social justice. Scholars of Africana studies, communication, criminal justice, education, and sociology will find this work particularly useful.

Book excerpt: Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo is the first book to address the question: How did a centuries-old, Swiss mountain tradition make its way into American country music? Along the way, the reader discovers that yodeling is not just a Swiss thing--everyone from Central African pygmies, Nashville hunks-in-hats, avant-garde tonsil-twisters like Meredith Monk, hiphop stars De La Soul, and pop stars like Jewel have been known to kick back and release a yodeling refrain. Along the way, we encounter a gallery of unique characters, ranging from the legendary, such as country singer Jimmie Rodgers, to the definitely different, including Mary Schneider (the Australian Queen of Yodeling) who specializes in yodeling Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and the Topp Twins, a yodeling lesbian duo who employ the sound in their songs aimed at battling homophobia. The book is both a serious study of the history of yodeling around the world and a fun look at how this unique sound has worked its way into popular culture. Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo promises to be a classic for fans of music and popular culture.

Book excerpt: The concept album is one of popular music's most celebrated-and misunderstood-achievements. This book examines the untold history of the rock concept album, from The Beatles to Beyoncé. The roots of the concept album are nearly as old as the long-playing record itself, as recording artists began using the format to transcend a mere collection of songs into a listening experience that takes the listener on a journey through its unifying mood, theme, narrative, or underlying idea. Along the way, artists as varied as the Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Parliament, Donna Summer, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, The Notorious B.I.G., Green Day, Janelle Monáe, and Kendrick Lamar created albums that form an extended conversation of art and music. Limits were pushed as the format grew over the subsequent eras. Seminal albums like the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Who's Tommy, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, stand alongside modern classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, Kendrick Lamar's good kid, "m.A.A.d city," and Beyoncé's Lemonade. Mixing iconic albums with some newer and lesser-known works makes for a book that ventures into the many sides of a history that has yet to be told-until now.

Book excerpt: A Tribe Called Quest • Beastie Boys • De La Soul • Eric B. & Rakim • The Fugees • KRS-One • Pete Rock & CL Smooth • Public Enemy • The Roots • Run-DMC • Wu-Tang Clan • and twenty-five more hip-hop immortals It’s a sad fact: hip-hop album liners have always been reduced to a list of producer and sample credits, a publicity photo or two, and some hastily composed shout-outs. That’s a damn shame, because few outside the game know about the true creative forces behind influential masterpieces like PE’s It Takes a Nation of Millions. . ., De La’s 3 Feet High and Rising, and Wu-Tang’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). A longtime scribe for the hip-hop nation, Brian Coleman fills this void, and delivers a thrilling, knockout oral history of the albums that define this dynamic and iconoclastic art form. The format: One chapter, one artist, one album, blow-by-blow and track-by-track, delivered straight from the original sources. Performers, producers, DJs, and b-boys–including Big Daddy Kane, Muggs and B-Real, Biz Markie, RZA, Ice-T, and Wyclef–step to the mic to talk about the influences, environment, equipment, samples, beats, beefs, and surprises that went into making each classic record. Studio craft and street smarts, sonic inspiration and skate ramps, triumph, tragedy, and take-out food–all played their part in creating these essential albums of the hip-hop canon. Insightful, raucous, and addictive, Check the Technique transports you back to hip-hop’s golden age with the greatest artists of the ’80s and ’90s. This is the book that belongs on the stacks next to your wax. “Brian Coleman’s writing is a lot like the albums he covers: direct, uproarious, and more than six-fifths genius.” –Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop “All producers and hip-hop fans must read this book. It really shows how these albums were made and touches the music fiend in everyone.” –DJ Evil Dee of Black Moon and Da Beatminerz “A rarity in mainstream publishing: a truly essential rap history.” –Ronin Ro, author of Have Gun Will Travel

Although the event is crowded with townsfolk, one man says the wrong thing and ends up the county's most wanted. He is president of the maple festival, Fred Newman, and he suddenly finds himself under arrest by the Chief of Police. Fred is an attorney in the small town of Chardon, and although he may be a prime suspect, he's thankfully not alone. Several of the townspeople are called before the court, and Fred takes it upon himself to represent his fellow citizens. However, he soon seems even more suspicious when he represents another attorney, which only causes additional small town trouble. Despite the cloud that has settled over Geauga County, Fred continues his duties as President of the maple festival. He takes his responsibilities seriously, but how can he run a successful event when half the attendees think he might be a murderer? It'll take further investigation and the help of a local police officer to clear Fred's name and save the famous celebration.
