The book addresses medical conditions by body system, their mechanism of acquisition, signs, symptoms, differential diagnoses, referral, treatment, return-to-participation criteria, and potential comorbidities. Previously titled Medical Conditions in the Athlete, this fourth edition uses current research to offer assessment and treatment information for medical conditions that affect both athletes and active populations. The highly esteemed authors, Katie Walsh Flanagan and Micki Cuppett, have combined their professional skills and educational expertise to create a valuable athletic training resource with updated content that aligns with Board of Certification (BOC) and Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) standards. The fourth edition offers the following updates: A new section on acute respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and SARS A new section on gastrointestinal disorders A new chapter on endocrine disorders Expanded content on concussion detection, treatment, and management, including return to play guidance New photos presenting medical conditions on diverse skin colors to help students learn identification skills Three case studies per chapter, delivered through HKPropel, to provide students with real-world examples; the case studies include multiple-choice questions that are assignable and automatically graded The book is organized into three sections—Introduction to Medical Conditions, Pharmacology and Interventions, and Medical Conditions by System—and there are 18 comprehensive chapters. Throughout the text, more than 350 full-color illustrations and photographs visually enhance readers’ comprehension of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Pharmacological tables organize drugs by categories that include generic and trade names, therapeutic uses, adult dosage information, and possible adverse effects. Important terminology is highlighted throughout the chapters, and a glossary appears at the end of the text. Chapter objectives and chapter summaries assist students in finding key information. Chapter quizzes, which are automatically graded, may also be assigned to test comprehension of critical concepts. At the beginning of the text, a Condition Finder serves as a quick reference so students or clinicians can easily flip to the information they need on specific conditions. Throughout the book, Red Flags for Urgent Intervention offer warning signs that health care providers should look for when working with patients; Clinical Tips discuss information that is critically important to professionals; and Condition Highlights cover specific medical conditions common to athletes and the physically active that require special attention or medical care. Medical Conditions in the Physically Active, Fourth Edition With HKPropel Access, provides comprehensive medical information to help readers build a framework for decision making that will help them choose effective courses of treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pregnancy is so thoroughly entangled with birth and babies in the popular imagination that a pregnancy which ends in miscarriage consistently appears as a failure or a waste of time – indeed, as not proper to pregnancy at all. But in this compelling book, Victoria Browne argues that reflection on miscarriage actually deepens and expands our understanding of pregnancy, forcing us to consider what pregnancy can amount to besides the production of a child. By exploring common themes within personal accounts of miscarriage-including feelings of failure, self-blame and being 'stuck in limbo'-Pregnancy Without Birth critically interrogates teleological discourses and disciplinary ideologies that elevate birth as pregnancy's 'natural' and 'normal' endpoint. As well as politicizing miscarriage as a feminist issue, the book articulates an alternative intercorporeal philosophy of pregnancy which embraces variation, invites us to sit with ambiguity, contingency and suspension, and enables us to see subjective agency in all pregnancies, even as they are shaped by biological, political and social forces beyond our personal control. What emerges is a relational feminist politics of full-spectrum solidarity, social justice and care (rather than individualized choice and responsibility), which breaks down presumed oppositions between pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth and live birth, and liberates pregnancy from reproductive futurism.

Book excerpt: Under BEPS Action 14, members of the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework on BEPS have committed to implement a minimum standard to strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of the mutual agreement procedure (MAP). The MAP is included in Article 25 of the OECD Model Tax Convention and commits countries to endeavour to resolve disputes related to the interpretation and application of tax treaties. The BEPS Action 14 Minimum Standard has been translated into specific terms of reference and a methodology for the peer review and monitoring process. The peer review process is conducted in two stages. Stage 1 assesses countries against the terms of reference of the minimum standard according to an agreed schedule of review. Stage 2 focuses on monitoring the follow-up of any recommendations resulting from jurisdictions' Stage 1 peer review report. This report reflects the outcome of the Stage 2 peer monitoring of the implementation of the BEPS Action 14 Minimum Standard by Viet Nam.

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of Disability and Communication covers a broad spectrum of topics related to how we perceive and understand disability and the language, constructs, constraints and communication behavior that shape disability discourse within society. The essays and original research presented in this volume address important matters of disability identity and intersectionality, broader cultural narratives and representation, institutional constructs and constraints, and points related to disability justice, advocacy, and public policy. In doing so, this book brings together a diverse group of over 40 international scholars to address timely problems and to promote disability justice by interrogating the way people communicate not only to people with disabilities, but also how we communicate about disability, and how people express themselves through their disabled identity.

This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 2033 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees adopted on 28 July 1951 in Geneva continues to provide the most comprehensive codification of the rights of refugees yet attempted. Consolidating previous international instruments relating to refugees, the 1951 Convention with its 1967 Protocol marks a cornerstone in the development of international refugee law. At present, there are 149 States Parties to one or both of these instruments, expressing a worldwide consensus on the definition of the term refugee and the fundamental rights to be granted to refugees. These facts demonstrate and underline the extraordinary significance of these instruments as the indispensable legal basis of international refugee law. This Commentary provides for a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol on an article-by-article basis, exposing the interrelationship between the different articles and discussing the latest developments in international refugee law. In addition, several thematic contributions analyse questions of international refugee law which are of general significance, such as regional developments, the interrelationship between refugee law and general human rights law, as well as the relationship between refugee law and the law of the sea.
