Book excerpt: "This collection takes a similar format to that of Auyero's earlier book, Invisible in Austin. It was conceived of at the start of the COVID era in UT's Urban Ethnography Lab, where Auyero and some of his colleagues and grad students discussed the ways that the pandemic had renewed conversations on a whole host of issues. But with this book, he wanted to diversify the contributions from authors at all career levels, from graduate students to senior scholars. Each chapter of "Portraits of Latin America" focuses on a specific person and social issue, but rather than being based in one city, these subjects are throughout Latin America and each chapter carefully situates these issues with the socio-historical context of their specific local regions or countries. The issues that come up throughout are threaded together by some central question that Auyero and his colleagues considered: How do people now make sense of the choices they face and how do they experience inequality? How do these experiences help people imagine what can be possible?"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what people without children do with all their free time and money? Do you assume that they must have a lot of both? The truth is more complex than that! Childfree people come from as many different backgrounds and life circumstances as people with children do. Some are partnered, and some are not. Some are well-educated, some aren't. Some are independently wealthy, and some are just scraping by. Dr. Zigmont's "Portraits of Childfree Wealth" is a collection of 26 vignettes based on interviews with Childfree people. He adds his own significant insights, as both a fellow Childfree professional and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. This book is an eye-opening look at the lives of people in the United States who deliberately chose not to become parents, and if you're in the same boat, you'll find a lot to relate to here. If you have children, you'll learn how the other half lives. And if you're a finance professional, you'll see how money still plays a role for people who don't have to worry about leaving assets to their children. In Portraits of Childfree Wealth, Dr. Jay Zigmont, CFP®, interviews 26 individuals and couples to understand their lives. Each portrait provides a different perspective on Childfree Wealth from a diverse population across the US. There are stories from people who are barely making ends meet and others who have achieved FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) or FILE (Financial Independence, Live Early). Being Childfree does not automatically make people rich, as we still suffer from income disparities. The difference is that if a Childfree person is barely making ends meet now, they would have drowned if they had a child. Some key findings: • The reasons for being Childfree are as varied as the people themselves. • There are very few or no regrets from people being Childfree. • Being Childfree does not automatically make you rich. • There is a relationship between growing up in poverty and poor and being Childfree. • Childfree Financial Independence is simple: 1. Get out of debt 2. Max out retirement plans. About the Author, Jay Zigmont, Ph.D., CFP® Dr. Jay, and his wife are Childfree and live in Water Valley, MS. He has a Ph.D. in Adult Learning from the University of Connecticut and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Childfree Wealth Specialist. Book excerpt: “Thank you Andrew and Ann Goldman for the persistence that it took to achieve the portraits in Facing North. It is a historic document for Ely, Minnesota that has worldwide interest as a snapshot of a unique northern community. You so accurately captured my friends and neighbors and I will always cherish this book.” —Will Steger “My work as a photojournalist has involved assignments about people and faraway cultures as often as about raw nature. Alas, I always felt there were more stories per square foot in Ely as anywhere else I have been. Look into these Ely faces Goldman has captured with his razor-sharp lens and read the stories in their eyes.” —Jim Brandenburg, from the Foreword Perched on the edge of the northern woods at the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Ely, Minnesota, holds special meaning for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. But what is it like for the people who live there year-round? Ann and Andrew Goldman offer a revealing portrayal of the unique people who call Ely home. Featuring more than one hundred portraits as well as vivid essays, Facing North tells the story of life in this Northwoods community: its breathtaking beauty, surprisingly diverse character, and complex history. A thriving destination area, Ely is a changing community, yet its traditions remain vibrant and strong. From resort owners and fishermen to canoe makers and artists, Facing North is an evocative tribute to the enduring nature of Ely and its people. This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust. Andrew Goldman is a freelance commercial photographer. Book excerpt: The meaning of a painted portrait and even its subject may be far more complex than expected, Tamar Garb reveals in this book. She charts for the first time the history of French female portraiture from its heyday in the early nineteenth century to its demise in the early twentieth century, showing how these paintings illuminate evolving social attitudes and aesthetic concerns in France over the course of the century. The author builds the discussion around six canonic works by Ingres, Manet, Cassatt, Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse, beginning with Ingres’s idealized portrait of Mme de Sennones and ending with Matisse’s elegiac last portrait of his wife. During the hundred years that separate these works, the female portrait went from being the ideal genre for the expression of painting’s capacity to describe and embellish “nature,” to the prime locus of its refusal to do so. Picasso’s Cubism, and specifically Ma Jolie, provides the fulcrum of this shift.
