Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has been described as the "Asian Century." Home to 60 per cent of the world's population and accounting for one-fourth of its Gross Domestic Product, by 2050, Asia will also have three of the worlds largest economies-China, India, and Japan. A dynamic hub in this rising Asia is the Southeast Asian region encompassing diverse countries, peoples and cultures. The 9th Asian Security Conference, organized in February 2007, addressed a range of issues and trends affecting this crucial region and their implications for regional and Asian security. The conference, titled Changing Security Dynamics in South East Asia deliberated on Southeast Asian perspectives on security, the role of external powers both current and also those that were rising, the problems of religious fundamentalism and terrorism, the challenges of maritime cooperation among countries abutting crucial world energy transit routes, the advantages of regional, multilateral organizations in fostering cooperative behaviours, and India's growing role and stakes in this region. The contributors point out that the primary security concerns confronting the region were often internal in nature. On the external front, they note the changing geo-political situation'due to the rise of China, a revitalized Japan, a more active Indian presence, along with the continued primacy of the United States. Stressing that these changes were accompanied by their own sets of opportunities and challenges, they express confidence in the ability of regional organizations like the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deal with the challenges. India and the countries of Southeast Asia have a rich shared history. New Delhi's policy initiatives like the 'Look East's policy have also deepened its economic and security links with the region. Contributors examine different aspects of this growing and multi-faceted relationship, including in meeting the common challenges of energy security, humanitarian and disaster relief, combating trans-national terrorism, among other issues. We hope that this book will contribute to a better understanding of the changing security dynamics in Southeast Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant factors for contemporary international relations is the growth of China’s economic, military, and political power. Indeed, few analysts would dispute the observation that China’s power has strongly influenced the structure of the international system, major-power strategic relations, international security, the patterns of trans-border economic activities, and most importantly, the political and security dynamics in Asia in the twenty-first century. This book maps the growth of China’s political, economic, and military capabilities and its impact on the security order in Asia over the coming decades. While updating the emerging power dimensions and prevailing discourse, it provides a nuanced analysis of whether the growth of Chinese power is resulting in Beijing becoming more assertive, or even aggressive, in its behavior and pursuit of national interests. It also examines how the key Asian countries perceive and react to the growth of China’s power and how US rebalancing would play out in the context of Beijing’s political, economic, and military power. China’s Power and Asian Security will be of huge interest to student and scholars of Asian politics, Chinese politics, security studies and international security and international relations more generally.

Book excerpt: This book uniquely applies the security reform agenda to Southeast Asia. It investigates recent developments in civil-military relations in the region, looking in particular at the impact and utility of the agenda on the region and assessing whether it is likely to help make the region more stable and less prone to military interventions. It provides an historical overview of the region’s civil-military relations and goes on to explore the dynamics of civil-military relations within the context of the security sector reform framework, focusing on the experiences of four of the region’s militaries: Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. It argues that although regional militaries have not necessarily followed a ‘Western’ model, significant developments have occurred that are broadly in keeping with the security sector reform agenda, and which suggests that the prospects for stable civil-military relations are brighter than some sceptics believe.
