Book excerpt: They came to fight for freedom and their country, they came to fight Germans. Men of the Polish Air Force, who had escaped first to France and then to Britain, to fly alongside the Royal Air Force just as Fighter Command faced its greatest challenge the Battle of Britain. Many of the Polish airmen joined existing RAF squadrons. The Poles also formed their own squadrons, but only four became operational during the Battle of Britain: Nos. 300 and 301, were bomber squadrons, with another two, Nos. 302 and 303, being fighter squadrons. Flying Hawker Hurricanes, both 302 and 303 squadrons were active by the middle of August 1940, just when they were most needed, at the height of the Battle of Britain, with Fighter Command stretched to its limit. The Polish squadrons, battle-hardened from their encounters with the Luftwaffe during the invasion of Poland and Battle of France, soon made their mark. In particular, 303 Squadron become the highest-scoring unit of Fighter Command. In total, 145 Polish pilots, the largest non-British contingent in Fighter Command at the time, fought in the Battle of Britain. While Winston Churchill praised the contribution of the Few, the pilots of many nationalities who had defended Britain, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding was more specific: Had it not been for the magnificent material contributed by the Polish squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry, I hesitate to say that the outcome of the Battle would have been the same.

Book excerpt: "Wechsberg was a connoisseur in the old Continental sense of the word, a man who valued perfection for its own sake, seeing its quest as worthy and its attainment as eminently possible. Born in 1907 into a wealthy, assimilated Jewish family, he saw his comfortable life threatened by World War I and then extinguished by Hitler's annexation of his native Czechoslovakia. He came to America with only a basic command of English but an impressive understanding of what was happening in Europe. His most powerful essays, describing the tragic political fragmentation of Europe at the end of World War II, are never strident or bitter; his appreciations of Europe's finer offering are a sheer delight."--BOOK JACKET.

My country and other European countries at the time are fighting a war with Germany. Before I was born, in 1918, Britain was at the end of World War I when the Germany surrendered to the British and French forces. Now Germany was controlled by a man known as Hitler. He controlled the Nazi Party who had reared their ugly heads. They said war was their intent to regain the lands, which was supposedly stolen from German nation after the end of World War I in the year 1918. The German Army, early in September 1939, marched their troops into Poland and took over their country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Whyte's well researched collection of Bible biographies has been of indispensable use to pastors, study group leaders and students of the scriptures for over 100 years. It is the most comprehensive and most well respected source of material for understanding the characters involved in the events of the Bible ever published. This is indeed the best exposition on Biblical characters ever written! Alexander Whyte reveals insights into the lives of the people of the Bible that casual readers might never find. Then he powerfully applies truths revealed in such a way that the reader is left spiritually convicted and seeking God's mercy. Volume six includes character studies on the following people/topics: I. THE SOWER WHO WENT FORTH TO SOW II. THE MAN WHICH SOWED GOOD SEED IN HIS FIELD, BUT HIS ENEMY CAME AND SOWED TARES AMONG THE WHEAT III. THE MAN WHO TOOK A GRAIN OF MUSTARD SEED, AND SOWED IT IN HIS FIELD IV. THE MAN WHO CAST SEED INTO THE GROUND AND IT GREW UP HE KNEW NOT HOW V. THE WOMAN WHO TOOK LEAVEN AND HID IT IN THREE MEASURES OF MEAL VI. THE MAN WHO FOUND TREASURE HID IN A FIELD VII. THE MERCHANT MAN WHO SOLD ALL THAT HE HAD AND BOUGHT THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE VIII. THE MAN WHO WENT OUT TO BORROW THREE LOAVES AT MIDNIGHT IX. THE IMPORTUNATE WIDOW X. THE PRODIGAL SON XI. THE MUCH FORGIVEN DEBTOR AND HIS MUCH LOVE XII. THE TEN VIRGINS XIII. THE WEDDING GUEST WHO SAT DOWN IN THE LOWEST ROOM XIV. THE BIDDEN TO THE GREAT MARRIAGE SUPPER, AND SOME OF THEIR EXCUSES XV. THE MAN WHO HAD NOT ON A WEDDING GARMENT XVI. THE PHARISEE XVII. THE PUBLICAN XVIII. THE BLIND LEADERS OF THE BLIND XIX. THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS XX. THE SLOTHFUL SERVANT WHO HID HIS LORD’S MONEY XXI. THE UNMERCIFUL SERVANT XXII. THE UNPROFITABLE SERVANT XXIII. THE LABOURER WITH THE EVIL EYE XXIV. THE CHILDREN OF CAPERNAUM PLAYING AT MARRIAGES AND FUNERALS IN THE MARKETPLACE XXV. THE SAMARITAN WHO SHEWED MERCY XXVI. MOSES ON THE NEW TESTAMENT MOUNT XXVII. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH OF EPHESUS XXVIII. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH IN SMYRNA XXIX. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH IN PERGAMOS XXX. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH IN THYATIRA XXXI. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH IN SARDIS XXXII. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH IN PHILADELPHIA XXXIII. THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH OF THE LAODICEANS Through the scriptures you meet the people of the Bible. But through Alexander Whyte you will come to know them better. Next to the Bible, you will find Bible Characters the greatest help in understanding the men and women in God's Word. Whyte writes brief biographies faithful to the Biblical text. Without stretching the truth, he stretches our minds to embrace the character of the individuals revealed there. He is never superficial. He writes like a modern newspaperman in terms of human interest and deep insight. It's just as though he had interviewed an individual and returned to the newspaper office to write up the feature! The reader of these works will not be disappointed as they will walk away with a deeper and greater understanding of those men and women God used in his Word as examples for us all.

Book excerpt: The sharp eye of Neelakantan Bhattathiripad noted the young Ravi Varma tracing lines on the sand. His son was a strange child in his opinion but he refrained from voicing it. “What would this son of his become, the scion of this strange race,” he wondered? “Always, always drawing and sketching things — was there a future in this?” His wife, Umamba Bayi indulged him too much. All this fanciful sketching, it was a dreamer’s life, thought Neelakantan. From his father, Ravi Varma learned to discipline his thoughts, from his mother the pictorial rhythms of poetry and music, and from his uncle, Raja Raja Varma, the way to express it all in concrete visual form, as he was doing on the sand. As an artist who not only keeps alive Raja Ravi Varma’s legacy, but is also his direct descendant, Rukmini Varma is a remarkable source of stories, anecdotes, and the most fascinating details about this legendary Indian painter, viewing him not only as her ancestor but also as a creative force who opened a whole new chapter in India’s artistic tradition. Rukmini Varma o?ers to unravel the story of Ravi Varma and all that made him the person he was, from a perspective that is both new but also intimate and deeply personal - a combination that is especially inviting.” - Manu S. Pillai Author, The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore
