Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I can remember writing poetry as early as the age of fourteen. For me, writing poems was either an expression of young love or a means of escaping farm life. I do know I write what I feel deep in my heart. Sometimes I would daydream about what life would be like after leaving the farm. At that time, I did not appreciate or value the importance of farm life. Then falling in love for the first time gave me words that would flow like water. That was the beginning of my poetry. Then came my retirement from the Air Force. I took a job as a substitute teacher to test the waters and see if I wanted to go back to the classroom. On May 23, 1995, was my last substitute teaching positions for the year. The last period of the day was a literature class, and yes, you guessed it, it was an assignment to write a poem. After directing the students on what they were to do, I sat back, thought about my daughter, who was also graduating, and at that moment, I wrote with them. The poem that came out of that session, "Life Captured," was the first in this book. After that, the words would sometimes overwhelm me. It did not matter where or when. I would sometimes wake up from a deep sleep, and there were words on my heart. Driving down the street, I would have to pull off the road. And can you imagine sitting in church, concentrating on the words of the pastor, and poem comes into your heart? That is what it was like for next few years. When the word came, I made every effort to put them on paper. If I did not have a notepad, I would write on whatever was available, a store receipts, the back of an envelope, or even a paper bag. It did not matter; I just knew I had to capture the words. You see, there was a problem with these abrupt encounters with words. I found, through experience, that I could not ignore them because if I did, they would be lost. Yes, the words that were flowing so freely at the time would be gone if I did not take heed at that exact moment. So I learned incredibly early that it did not matter when or where the words came; I had to stop everything and write them down. So you see, my poetry comes to me at times when the spirit urges it. I cannot just will a poem to be. It must be stirred up in my spirit. My poetry is a combination of spiritual and emotional love. The love for people and my love of God. I never know which will spark the flame, and that does not matter, but I do know I must be ready to put pen to paper when it happens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honored as a "Best Book of 2014" by Library Journal NPR.org writes: “In his second collection, The New Testament, Brown treats disease and love and lust between men, with a gentle touch, returning again and again to the stories of the Bible, which confirm or dispute his vision of real life. 'Every last word is contagious,' he writes, awake to all the implications of that phrase. There is plenty of guilt—survivor’s guilt, sinner’s guilt—and ever-present death, but also the joy of survival and sin. And not everyone has the chutzpah to rewrite The Good Book.”—NPR.org "Erotic and grief-stricken, ministerial and playful, Brown offers his reader a journey unlike any other in contemporary poetry."—Rain Taxi "To read Jericho Brown's poems is to encounter devastating genius."—Claudia Rankine In the world of Jericho Brown's second book, disease runs through the body, violence runs through the neighborhood, memories run through the mind, trauma runs through generations. Almost eerily quiet in even the bluntest of poems, Brown gives us the ache of a throat that has yet to say the hardest thing—and the truth is coming on fast. Fairy Tale Say the shame I see inching like steam Along the streets will never seep Beneath the doors of this bedroom, And if it does, if we dare to breathe, Tell me that though the world ends us, Lover, it cannot end our love Of narrative. Don’t you have a story For me?—like the one you tell With fingers over my lips to keep me From sighing when—before the queen Is kidnapped—the prince bows To the enemy, handing over the horn Of his favorite unicorn like those men Brought, bought, and whipped until They accepted their masters’ names. Jericho Brown worked as the speechwriter for the mayor of New Orleans before earning his PhD in creative writing and literature from the University of Houston. His first book, PLEASE (New Issues), won the American Book Award. He currently teaches at Emory University and lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poetry was brought about when the Holy Spirit began working in my heart, right after I accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior, in 1975. He has been working ever since. I would like to express my thanks to everyone who prayed for me and still pray for me and offered words of encouragement. Also I'd like to thank my loving husband Glen, for his faith and belief, that I would one day, ask Jesus into my heart. Also for answering my endless questions until all hours of the morning. We lived in Florida for seventeen years, before moving back home to Ohio. Ten of those years we spent in Prison Ministry. Some of these poems were written about some of the men we ministered to, others came from my own life experiences, and of course from God nudging me to write about them. As I compiled these poems, I kept thinking, "God isn't finished with me yet." It is my sincere hope that by reading this poetry, someone somewhere will see the need to ask our Lord Jesus Christ, into their life. The poems are written as the Holy Spirit leads me. It may be a time of sorrow, happiness, wonder, trials or just plain everyday situations that happens that God sees me through. I do pray that the words will touch your heart and bring you a bit of love, comfort, hope and understanding, whatever the need may be. Perhaps you too will write a book with God. Remember, all honor, praise and glory, belong to God.

Book excerpt: In an age and time where poetry and prose of the heart are slowly being replaced with musical thumps wrapped in loud beats that demand our undivided attention, this book is a solace of poetic expressions wherein you may pause from the “hurried busyness” of life and soothe your soul. It is a candid exposé of life lessons predicated on debunking the widely held misconception that we only live once to heralding the actuality that we, in fact, die at least once but we live every day. It is a masterful fusion of prose, poems, and prayers that challenge readers to first conceptualize their best-lived life and then to live that life fully each day and, secondly, to move a step further and to visualize the benefits and joys of their best-lived life compounded exponentially and to know with full assurance that that abundant life envisioned can be their reality. This book is one woman’s experience of how God pursued her and won her heart with His patient, undying, don’t-want-anything-in-return love and the story of how her life changed on the journey to find His heart. It is a compelling life story that will touch your soul, move your heart, and inspire you to embark on your own quest to having/possessing/enjoying life right here, right now.
