Book excerpt: In a political landscape that instils abject horror in most of us, we have been delivered one shining ray of hope - going by the name of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. At age 29 she became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress, and she shows no signs of stopping yet. Covering everything from democracy to climate change to feminism, this pocket book of her most insightful, important and brilliant quotes will bring you courage and faith that our future could be in very good hands yet. "I'm used to being on my feet 18 hours a day. I'm used to receiving a lot of heat. I'm used to people trying to make me feel bad. They call it 'working class' for a reason, because you are working non-stop." "If they want to make an example out of me, I will gladly be one. Hopefully, we can be an example of dedication, courage and persistence under fire. I also hope to be an example of not tolerating nonsense, too." "If I was a rational person, I would have dropped out of this race a long time ago."

Book excerpt: "The Hip Pocket Guide to Offbeat Wisdom" is an anthology of succinct and profound quotations ranging from Popeye to Picasso, from Johnny Rotten to Jesus. The quotes have been chosen and arranged very deliberately to best play off, amplify, and inform each other. The quotes in this collection may or may not reflect the author's temperament, with its eastern influenced mysticism, Germanic penchant for deep thought, and slightly off-center sensibility. These collected quotations are wonderful in many ways - as intellectual chewing gum, as idea-and-reflection-generators, and as conversational Tabasco.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique collection of advice for life and perhaps the first 'self-help' book ever written Written over 350 years ago, The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence is a subtle collection of 300 witty and thought-provoking aphorisms. From the art of being lucky to the healthy use of caution, these elegant maxims were created as a guide to life, with further suggestions given on cultivating good taste, knowing how to refuse, the foolishness of complaining and the wisdom of controlling one's passions. Baltasar Gracian intended these ingenious, pragmatic aphorisms to challenge the mind, and recognised that few would be capable of applying them. In Jeremy Robbins's introduction to his penetrating new translation, he examines Gracian's place in Spanish literature and his previous works. Robbins also looks at the themes, contexts and contradictions of The Pocket Oracle, as well as the brevity and subtlety of Gracian's cool-headed aphorisms. This edition also contains a chronology, suggested further reading and notes. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War II fighter Ace’s previously unpublished draft—an account of the “Long Trek” from Normandy into the heart of the Third Reich itself. Having published two of his own books, Wing Leader and The Circle of Air Fighting, Air Vice-Marshal Johnnie Johnson co-authored several more with another fighter ace, namely Wing Commander P.B. “Laddie” Lucas. In 1997, the “AVM” suggested to his friend, the prolific author Dilip Sarkar, that the pair should collaborate on The Great Adventure. “Greycap Leader” was to produce a draft, after which Dilip would add the historical detail and comment. Sadly, the project was unfulfilled, because Johnnie became ill and passed away, aged eighty-five, in 2001. Years later, Johnnie’s eldest son, Chris, discovered the manuscript among his august father’s papers. In order to keep Johnnie’s memory evergreen, Chris turned to Dilip to finally see the project through to its conclusion. In this book Johnnie revisits certain aspects of his wartime service, including the development of tactical air cooperation with ground forces; his time as a Canadian wing leader in 1943, when the Spitfire Mk IX at last outclassed the Fw 190; and details his involvement in some of the most important battles of the defeat of Nazi Germany, including Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings in 1944, Operation Market Garden and the airborne assault at Arnhem, and the Rhine Crossings, throughout all of which Johnnie also commanded Canadian wings. Johnnie Johnson’s Great Adventure “brings to life the man of the book in such an interesting and heroic manner . . . if it wasn’t for these brave heroes we might not have won the war” (UK Historian).

Book excerpt: "Views differ on bitcoin, but few doubt the transformative potential of Blockchain technology. The Truth Machine is the best book so far on what has happened and what may come along. It demands the attention of anyone concerned with our economic future." —Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard, Former Treasury Secretary From Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna, the authors of The Age of Cryptocurrency, comes the definitive work on the Internet’s Next Big Thing: The Blockchain. Big banks have grown bigger and more entrenched. Privacy exists only until the next hack. Credit card fraud is a fact of life. Many of the “legacy systems” once designed to make our lives easier and our economy more efficient are no longer up to the task. Yet there is a way past all this—a new kind of operating system with the potential to revolutionize vast swaths of our economy: the blockchain. In The Truth Machine, Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna demystify the blockchain and explain why it can restore personal control over our data, assets, and identities; grant billions of excluded people access to the global economy; and shift the balance of power to revive society’s faith in itself. They reveal the disruption it promises for industries including finance, tech, legal, and shipping. Casey and Vigna expose the challenge of replacing trusted (and not-so-trusted) institutions on which we’ve relied for centuries with a radical model that bypasses them. The Truth Machine reveals the empowerment possible when self-interested middlemen give way to the transparency of the blockchain, while highlighting the job losses, assertion of special interests, and threat to social cohesion that will accompany this shift. With the same balanced perspective they brought to The Age of Cryptocurrency, Casey and Vigna show why we all must care about the path that blockchain technology takes—moving humanity forward, not backward.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF AUGUST'S BEST NEW BOOKS BY CNN | ON Cosmo's LIST OF 12 BOOKS YOU'LL BE DESPERATE TO READ THIS SUMMER | ONE OF Autostraddle's 60 QUEER & FEMINIST BOOKS COMING YOUR WAY THIS SUMMER | A 2020 TITLE TO WATCH BY Library Journal | LISTED ON Marie Claire's POLITICAL BOOKS TO READ With a preface by Keegan-Michael Key In the vein of Notorious RBG, seventeen writers explore the multiple meanings of a young Latina politician who has already made history. From the moment Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat a ten-term incumbent in the primary election for New York’s 14th, her journey to the national, if not world, stage, was fast-tracked. Six months later, as the youngest Congresswoman ever elected, AOC became one of a handful of Latina politicians in Washington, D.C. Just thirty, she represents her generation, the millennials, in many groundbreaking ways: proudly working class, Democratic Socialist, of Puerto Rican descent, master of social media, not to mention of the Bronx, feminist—and a great dancer. AOC investigates her symbolic and personal significance for so many, from her willingness to use her imperfect bi-lingualism, to why men are so threatened by her power, to the long history of Puerto Rican activism that she joins. Contributors span a wide range of voices and ages, from media to the arts and politics: Keegan-Michael Key — Preface Lynda Lopez — Introduction: "The Meaning of AOC" Jennine Capó Crucet — "An Open Letter to Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez" Andrea González-Ramírez — "Women Like Me Aren’t Supposed to Run for Office" Patricia Reynoso — “'The First Latina to . . .'” Pedro Regalado — “'Pa’lante!': The Long History of Puerto Rican Activism in New York City" Rebecca Traister — "The Imagined Threat of a Woman Who Governs Like a Man" Natalia Sylvester — "In No Uncertain Terms" Erin Aubry Kaplan — "The Center Will Not Hold. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is Counting on It" Tracey Ross — "A Just Society" Carmen Rita Wong — "Latinas Are So Money" Mariana Atencio — "AOC the Influencer" Wendy Carrillo — "What AOC and I Learned at Standing Rock" Nathan J. Robinson — "The Democratic Socialism of AOC" Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez — "On Being an Indignant Brown Girl" Elizabeth Yeampierre — "Making the Green New Deal the Real Deal" María Cristina “MC” González Noguera — "The Hustle"
