Book excerpt: An energetic and exhilarating account of the Victorian entertainment industry, its extraordinary success and enduring impact The Victorians invented mass entertainment. As the nineteenth century’s growing industrialized class acquired the funds and the free time to pursue leisure activities, their every whim was satisfied by entrepreneurs building new venues for popular amusement. Contrary to their reputation as dour, buttoned-up prudes, the Victorians reveled in these newly created ‘palaces of pleasure’. In this vivid, captivating book, Lee Jackson charts the rise of well-known institutions such as gin palaces, music halls, seaside resorts and football clubs, as well as the more peculiar attractions of the pleasure garden and international exposition, ranging from parachuting monkeys and human zoos to theme park thrill rides. He explores how vibrant mass entertainment came to dominate leisure time and how the attempts of religious groups and secular improvers to curb ‘immorality’ in the pub, variety theater and dance hall faltered in the face of commercial success. The Victorians’ unbounded love of leisure created a nationally significant and influential economic force: the modern entertainment industry.

Book excerpt: Artist Hunt Slonem creates his magical paintings and sculptures of flora, fauna, saints, and other subjects with inspiration that he draws not only from his sense of spirituality, but also from his environment in a "self-created world" filled with myriad exotic forms, vivid colors, and mystical essences. While the public can imagine an artist at work or at home, rarely does an aficionado or a reader gain access to an artist's lair. That will change with the publication of Pleasure Palaces: The Art and Homes of Hunt Slonem, by Vincent Katz. Here, the reader is invited into not only the artist's studios (past and present) but also his homes in New York and Louisiana. From Slonem's first downtown studio in New York City "where it all began" in 1975 (shown on the book's cover) to his Victorian mansion on the Hudson River in Kingston, New York, as well as his two Louisiana plantations-one on the Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish, about two hours' drive northwest of New Orleans, and the other in a remote location one hour north of Baton Rouge-the reader will get a unique perspective on how this Neo-Expressionist artist's environments are brought to life by his collections of antique neo-Gothic furniture, Blenko glass, and period frames, not to mention his astonishing collection of tropical birds, which are both his muses and his passion. Multi-talented poet/author/curator/documentarian/editor Vincent Katz, who has written about Slonem numerous times and has previously contributed poetry to Slonem's publications Hunt's Place and Exotica, has written an essay for Pleasure Palaces that not only provides a critical analysis of the artist's work, but also explores his spiritual life and how it influences his art and the extraordinary homes that are his havens. Katz's essay and an interview with the artist bookend lavishly illustrated color sections, with views of Slonem's estates (Albania Plantation, Lakeside Plantation, Cordt's Mansion) and New York City studios (including the private aviary in his West 10th Street studio) interspersed with his oil and watercolor paintings of flora and fauna. At the book's conclusion, an up-to-date chronology of Slonem's solo and group exhibitions (including forthcoming 2007 shows), a bibliography, a list of awards received, and a list of public collections that include his works complete this comprehensive document of Slonem's body of work.

Book excerpt: Basing her gripping tale on the life of the real Jane Popyncourt, gifted author Kate Emerson brings the Tudor monarchs, their family, and their courtiers to brilliant life in this vibrant novel. Beautiful. Seductive. Innocent. Jane Popyncourt was brought to the court as a child to be ward of the king and a companion to his daughters—the princesses Margaret and Mary. With no money of her own, Jane could not hope for a powerful marriage, or perhaps even marriage at all. But as she grows into a lovely young woman, she still receives flattering attention from the virile young men flocking to serve the handsome new king, Henry VIII, who has recently married Catherine of Aragon. Then a dashing French prisoner of war, cousin to the king of France, is brought to London, and Jane finds she cannot help giving some of her heart—and more—to a man she can never marry. But the Tudor court is filled with dangers as well as seductions, and there are mysteries surrounding Jane’s birth that have made her deadly enemies. Can she cultivate her beauty and her amorous wiles to guide her along a perilous path and bring her at last to happiness?

Some six thousand languages are still spoken on the planet, and author Glenn Dixon – an expert is socio-linguistics and a tireless adventurer – travels to the Earth's four corners to explore the way these languages create and mould societies. As one philosopher said, languages are Houses of Being. After doing graduate work in linguistics, Dixon wanted to visit these houses or "palaces" himself – to stroll along their sidewalks, knock on their doors, and peek in their windows. He wanted to see what they were hiding in their basements ... even if it meant a little bit of trouble. In some cases, a whole lot of trouble! Join him on his adventure as, with wit and humour, he works toward a real understanding of how and why we communicate the way we do in the Global Village.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient American palaces still captivate those who stand before them. Even in their fallen and ruined condition, the palaces project such power that, according to the editors of this new collection, it must have been deliberately drawn into their formal designs, spatial layouts, and choice of locations. Such messages separated palaces from other elite architecture and reinforced the power and privilege of those residing in them. Indeed, as Christie and Sarro write, "the relation between political power and architecture is a pervasive and intriguing theme in the Americas." Given the variety of cultures, time periods, and geographical locations examined within, the editors of this book have grouped the articles into four sections. The first looks at palaces in cultures where they have not previously been identified, including the Huaca of Moche Site, the Wari of Peru, and Chaco Canyon in the U.S. Southwest. The second section discusses palaces as "stage sets" that express power, such as those found among the Maya, among the Coast Salish of the Pacific Northwest, and at El Tajín on the Mexican Gulf Coast. The third part of the volume presents cases in which differences in elite residences imply differences in social status, with examples from Pasado de la Amada, the Valley of Oaxaca, Teotihuacan, and the Aztecs. The final section compares architectural strategies between cultures; the models here are Farfán, Peru, under both the Chimú and the Inka, and the separate states of the Maya and the Inka. Such scope, and the quality of the scholarship, make Palaces and Power in the Americas a must-have work on the subject.
