Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Play and Play Equipment for the Preschool Child Play is the child's way of learning, of experimenting, of trying himself out, of finding out about everything in the world around him. It is full of pleasure for him, for it is full of new experiences and new combinations of past ones. Play is, at the same time, a serious thing to him and should be planned for seriously by his parents. Every mother can learn a great deal about play if she will watch her child and not interfere with him. By the time he is a year old he bangs his toys to make a noise and piles blocks one on the other. He fills his pails with sand and empties them again; he points out figures or colors in his picture books, trying to repeat the word he heard when someone else pointed them out. Gradually, as the child grows older, he becomes more skillful in his move ments and can pile his blocks higher and even tries to catch a ball and later to string large beads. Things that he could not do a few months before are becoming easy. He wants toys with which he can do something. He learns to walk, and with this new accomplishment he starts the pulling and pushing kinds of play. He drags along the floor a toy dog or a box tied to a string, and shoves a chair across the room. Perhaps you have shown him how to throw a ball, and he suddenly begins to throw everything he can reach. Then, perhaps, he finds a crayon and scribbles with it on paper, on the walls, on the floor. At 2 or 3 years he begins to play with other children of his age. If he has older brothers and sisters, they may try to make him share their games, though at first he will not know what they are driving at. To play his part, to wait his turn, to follow the rules of the game, to pay a penalty if he plays out of turn are ideas that are as yet over his head. After a while he will have grasped them and with them some of the fundamental lessons of happy living. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Play and Play Materials for the Pre-School Child To make a little clearer the purposes and needs of the successive play stages of the pre-school period, we will 'consider it as roughly divided into two periods. The first stage, directly following birth is one Of very rapid growth and is concerned with developing the large important leg, arm, and trunk muscles, in learning to focus the eyes, to recognize sounds and develop the voice, and absorbing through the senses as much as possible about the properties and qualities Of things about him. The second period begins at from two and a half to three years. While physical activity continues to fill the day, it now takes the form of dramatic and re presentative play and is accompanied by a great deal Of construction with materials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finger Plays for Nursery and Kindergarten What the child imitates, says Froebel, he begins to understand. Let him represent the flying Of birds and he enters partially into the life of birds. Let him imitate the rapid motion of fishes in the water and his sympathy with fishes is quickened. Let him reproduce the activities of farmer, miller and baker, and his eyes open to the meaning of their work. In one word let him reflect in his play the varied aspects of life and his thought will begin to grapple with their significance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stick-and-Pea Plays: Pastimes for the Children's Year What sort of play is the best sort of house-play for the child? If I could ask the mothers and fathers and teachers who think about such things, I should expect a reply somewhat like this: The best sort of house-play for the child is a play the child takes to naturally; a play the child can play largely by itself; a play that calls out the child's activities, trains the hand, educates the eye, exercises the judgment, stirs the imagination - and gives pleasure all the while; a play that yields something to take, to hold, to keep, to use; a play that leads readily to talks, and stories, and songs, with a beautiful lesson at the heart of them. Perhaps the first play-instinct of the child, when the little brain begins to think and the little hands to do, is in the making of mimic objects and the make-believe use of them. But the child is not merely imitative. The child is a Robinson Crusoe and a "Swiss Family Robinson" all in one. The child adapts the thing at hand to the need of the moment, to any end desired. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
