Book excerpt: From former assistant secretary of state Kurt M. Campbell comes the definitive analysis and explanation of the new major shift in American foreign policy, its interests and assets, to Asia. There is a quiet drama playing out in American foreign policy far from the dark contours of upheaval in the Middle East and South Asia and the hovering drone attacks of the war on terror. The United States is in the midst of a substantial and long-term national project, which is proceeding in fits and starts, to reorient its foreign policy to the East. The central tenet of this policy shift, aka the Pivot, is that the United States will need to do more with and in the Asia-Pacific hemisphere to help revitalize its own economy, to realize the full potential of the region's dramatic innovation, and to keep the peace in the world's most dynamic region where the lion's share of the history of the twenty-first century will be written. This book is about a necessary course correction for American diplomacy, commercial engagement, and military innovation during a time of unrelenting and largely unrewarding conflict. While the United States has intensified its focus on the Asia-Pacific arena relative to previous administrations, much more remains to be done. The Pivot is about that future. It explores how the United States should construct a strategy that will position it to maneuver across the East and offers a clarion call for cunning, dexterity, and ingenuity in the period ahead for American statecraft in the Asia-Pacific region.

Book excerpt: The 1993 federal election was in many ways the strangest in Canada’s history. The results were unprecedented: the governing party was reduced to two seats, a separatist party became the official opposition, and a new regional party swept the West. Pivot or Pirouette? covers both the backstory and the aftermath, arguing that although the shocking results seemed pivotal, ultimately the pivot turned into a full pirouette as Canadian politics returned to historical norms. New parties shake up the system but are eventually absorbed into it, bringing innovation but not transformation. You can’t understand modern Canadian politics without understanding the 1993 election.

Book excerpt: The strangest election in modern Canadian history, described by a political insider. The 1993 Canadian general election felt like a watershed moment. A once dominant conservative coalition splintered into decentralized regional parties, despite the national party's efforts to rally behind the first female prime minister. The separatist Bloc Québécois claimed the opposition and the regional Reform Party swept the West, reducing the traditional Conservatives to two seats. Tom Flanagan, campaign manager through the '90s, describes how this sudden populist "pivot" corrected into a full pirouette as the traditional parties absorbed the new movements. Pivot or Pirouette? proves the time-tested truism: no matter how much new parties may shake up the system, eventually they are absorbed into it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there have been countless fun books written on square dancing, Squaredance Fundamentals was the first to cut to the chase. There is no interesting history of square dancing, there are no entertaining anecdotes, just the nuts and bolts of how to square dance. The author worked painstakingly with the graphic artist to execute a feat never achieved before in a square dance manual. Revolutionary illustrations show the dancer's point of view, not just the spectators' viewpoint. Dancers can, without turning on their heads, glean from the detailed illustrations exactly what they need to be doing with their hands, feet, etc. Each dancer can effortlessly grasp the material and easily retain it. Renown master caller/teacher, Marshall Flippo, assiduously assisted the author in establishing the very first guidelines for standardized "Basic Maneuvers" which would enable square dancers to dance gracefully with any group, anywhere. This was a true innovation in square dancing not yet available in the late 1960's. Marshall also painstakingly edited this first-of-its-kind book, twice! - to be sure it met the highest standards of accuracy and ease of understanding for square dancing neophytes. One of the greatest merits of this book is its logical continuity, which can be a tremendous aid to both the caller/teacher and the student, regardless of how it is used. New dancers, taking lessons, can go home and review what they have learned in class and prepare for the next, significantly shortening the learning curve. Although a few changes in the names of the calls have been made through the years, it is a simple task to merely write in the current name for the square dance call according to your instructor. But no one shows you better how to execute the maneuvers than John W. Jones with his super simplified instructions and state-of-the-art illustrations in Squaredance Fundamentals - the gold standard for over 37 years.
