Book excerpt: This book has developed from a short residential course organised by the Department of Minerals Engineering and the Department of Extra Mural Studies of the University of Birmingham. The course was concerned mainly with physical methods of analysis of minerals and mineral products, and particular regard was given to 'non-destructive' methods, with special emphasis on newly available techniques but with a review of older methods and their recent developments included therein. Mineral analysis is obviously of great importance in all the stages of mineral exploration, processing, and utilisation. Selection of a method for a particular mineral or mineral product will depend upon a number of factors, primarily whether an elementary analysis or a phase or structure analysis is required. It will also depend upon the accuracy required. The chapters in the book covering the different methods show the range of useful applicability of the methods considered and should prove valuable as an aid or methods for a given set of circumstances. in selecting a suitable method The book, referring as it does to the majority of the instrumental methods available today (as well as, for comparison, a useful contribution on the place of classical wet chemical analysis) will be valuable to the student as well as to those analysts, research workers, and process engineers who are concerned with the winning, processing, and utilisation of minerals and mineral products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of review articles by eminent petrologists, summarizing recent scientific achievements in this field. The papers address the physico-chemical conditions of the origin of crystalline rocks as well as characteristics of their mineral assemblages. The book is divided into three main sections: Section 1 covers general thermodynamics and mineral equilibria; Section 2 covers metamorphic and metasomatic processes; and the final section discusses the mantle and magmatic processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Analysis and Thermodynamic Properties of Solids, Second Edition covers foundational principles and recent updates in the field, presenting an authoritative overview of theoretical knowledge and practical applications across several fields. Since the first edition of this book was published, large developments have occurred in the theoretical understanding of—and subsequent ability to assess and apply—principles of thermal analysis. Drawing on the knowledge of its expert author, this second edition provides fascinating insight for both new and experienced students, researchers, and industry professionals whose work is influenced or impacted by thermo analysis principles and tools. Part 1 provides a detailed introduction and guide to theoretical aspects of thermal analysis and the related impact of thermodynamics. Key terminology and concepts, the fundamentals of thermophysical examinations, thermostatics, equilibrium background, thermotics, reaction kinetics and models, thermokinetics and the exploitation of fractals are all discussed. Part 2 then goes on to discuss practical applications of this theoretical information to topics such as crystallization kinetics and glass states, thermodynamics in superconductor models, and climate change. Includes fully updated as well as new chapters on kinetic phase diagrams, thermokinetics in DTA experiments, and crystallization kinetics Discusses the influence of key derivatives such as thermostatics, thermodynamics, thermotics, and thermokinetics Helps readers understand and describe reaction kinetics in solids, both in terms of simplified descriptions of the reaction mechanism models and averaged descriptions using fractals

Book excerpt: Volume 10 of Reviews in Mineralogy reviews the use of a powerful probe into metamorphic process: mineral assemblages and the composition of minerals. Put very simply, this volume attempts to answer the question: "What can we learn about metamorphism through the study of minerals in metamorphic rocks?" It is not an encyclopedic summary of metamorphic mineral assemblages; instead it attempts to present basic research strategies and examples of their application. Moreover, in order to limit and unify the subject matter, it concentrates on the chemical aspects of metamorphism and regrettably ignores other important kinds of studies of metamorphic rocks and minerals conducted by structural geologists, structural petrologists, and geophysicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book Metamorphic Rocks and Metamorphic Belts (in Japanese) was published by Iwanami Shoten, Publishers, in Tokyo in 1965. A few years later, Mr D. Lynch-Blosse of George Allen & Unwin Ltd contacted me to explore the possibility of translating it into English. Thus, translation accompanied by rewriting of substantial parts of the book was made in subsequent years, resulting in the present book Metamorphism and Metamorphic Belts. This title was chosen to emphasize the tectonic Significance of metamorphic belts. Metamorphic geology has a long history. The microscopic description and classification of metamorphic rocks began in the late nineteenth century. The theory of equilibrium mineral assemblages began in the first half of the twentieth century. Detailed mineralogical studies and the experimental determination of the pressure-temperature conditions of metamorphism began in the 1950s. The importance of metamorphic petrology in our understanding of the tectonic processes has been realized only in the past decade. This book is intended to synthesize the mineralogic, petrologic" and tectonic aspects of metamorphism. Advanced treatment of the thermodynamic and structural aspects is not intended.
