Book excerpt: Any form of flexible learning necessitates an assessment of technological preparedness of the stakeholders. This study aimed to assess the technological preparedness of Pangasinan State University (PSU) as it implements flexible learning modality (FLM). Participated in by nearly 20,000 students through a survey conducted during the School Year 2020-2021, findings showed a general technological preparedness of the students for online learning. Main challenges found included intermittent power interruptions in various municipalities in the Pangasinan, Philippines during the early phase of FLM, as well as the poor internet connection. Issues found included costly purchase of mobile data, stress on multiple online submissions of requirements, preference of printed study guides, no learning spaces at home, and technical difficulties on the use of the online learning platform used by PSU. Recommendations include re-alignment of unused funds on printing services for the purchase of mobile data for qualified students, synchronous submissions of requirements online per college, and task-based orientation on the use of the platform. These findings were even micro-analyzed in one of its campuses, the Lingayen Campus to provide a campus-view on the implementation of the online modality. This book will help in answering the question - are we prepared for online learning?

Book excerpt: This book investigates the dilemma of educating students for future work in the context of the Philippines, one of the top sources of migrant labor in the world. Here, colleges and universities are expected to not only educate students for jobs within the country, but for potential employers beyond national borders. It demonstrates how human capital ideology reinforces such export-oriented education, creating an assumed relationship among academic credentials, overseas opportunity, and future migrant remittances. Findings indicate that attempts to produce migrant workers undermine the job security of college instructors, skew local curriculum towards foreign requirements, and challenge efforts to develop academic programs in line with local needs. As more developing nations turn to migration as a development strategy, colleges and universities face increasing pressures to produce future migrant workers who will have an advantage over other nationalities. This book emphasises the importance of understanding how this global phenomenon affects colleges and universities, as well as the teachers and students within these institutions. This book raises important questions on the role of universities in today’s global economy and the effects of contemporary migration flows on developing countries.

Book excerpt: In view of the increasing number of Third World countries considering the establishment of women's colleges to meet the demand for the higher education of women, presenting a case study of two key women's colleges in the Philippines. Within the context of global, national and local changes since the fall of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, academic and administrative leaders at two prestigious women's colleges candidly discuss how their respective institutions adapted to their environments and how the colleges will fare in the future. Preferences for large, coeducational institutions; the emergence of less expensive tertiary institutions; and the downward spiral of a weak national economy combined to destabilized the enrollment base of these colleges. Factors unique to the Philippines including an increasing number of female overseas contract workers; struggles with national language preferences; and the growth of feminism also affected the colleges. In response, the colleges expanded their curricula, chose high-profile presidents, focused on faculty development, and acquired technology. Decision-markers at these colleges will have to continue in their efforts at solidifying their positions in the Philippine higher education system. The book that women's colleges worldwide must articulate their unique purposes and collaborate with other institutions to strengthen their organizations.
