Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the classical and medieval conceptions of Fortune shifted to the modern notion of chanceIs chance nothing more than a projection of human desire on to the world? In this fascinating new study, John Lyons argues that the idea of chance assumed new vigour in the late Renaissance, when converging philosophical and literary currents demystified the powerful concept of Fortune, sensitizing writers to the relationship between human desire and the world's apparent randomness. Up to now, the story of chance has been written by historians of mathematical thought and has focused on calculation, probability and gambling. Lyons, by contrast, highlights the ethical, aesthetic and even erotic aspects of chance. He offers detailed readings of the works of major French authors - Montaigne, Corneille, Lafayette, Scudery, Pascal, Racine, Bossuet, and La Bruyere.

Dr. Melanie Lipton is no stranger to the supernatural. She knows immortals better than they know themselves, right down to their stubborn little genes. So although a handsome rogue immortal seems suspicious to her colleagues, Sebastien Newcombe intrigues Melanie. His history is checkered, his scars are impressive, and his ideas are daring. But it's not his ideas that have Melanie fighting off surges of desire… Bastien is used to being the bad guy. In fact, he can't remember the last time he had an ally he could trust. But Melanie is different—and under her calm, professional exterior he senses a passion beyond anything in his centuries of experience. Giving in to temptation is out of the question—he can't put her in danger. But she isn't asking him… RT Book Reviews“With this excellent entry, rising star Duvall is fast proving to be a major player in paranormal romance!”— “With a deeply emotional love story, two beautiful, complex main characters, and a pulse-pounding adventure that won’t let up, this book was haunting and addictive.”—The Romance Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past years there has been considerable effort to move robots from industrial environments to our daily lives where they can collaborate and interact with humans to improve our life quality. One of the key challenges in this direction is to make a suitable robot control system that can adapt to humans and interactively learn from humans to facilitate the efficient and safe co-existence of the two. The applications of such robotic systems include: service robotics and physical human-robot collaboration, assistive and rehabilitation robotics, semi-autonomous cars, etc. To achieve the goal of integrating robotic systems into these applications, several important research directions must be explored. One such direction is the study of skill transfer, where a human operator’s skilled executions are used to obtain an autonomous controller. Another important direction is shared control, where a robotic controller and humans control the same body, tool, mechanism, car, etc. Shared control, in turn invokes very rich research questions such as co-adaptation between the human and the robot, where the two agents can benefit from each other’s skills or must adapt to each other’s behavior to achieve effective cooperative task executions. The aim of this Research Topic is to help bridge the gap between the state-of-the-art and above-mentioned goals through novel multidisciplinary approaches in human-in-the-loop robot control and learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author presents a new computational model of forestalling common flaws in autonomous robot behavior. To this end, robots are equipped with structured reactive plans (SRPs) which are concurrent control programs that can not only be interpreted but also be reasoned about and manipulated. The author develops a representation for SRPs in which declarative statements for goals, perceptions, and beliefs make the structure and purpose of SRPs explicit and thereby simplify and speed up reasoning about SRPs and their projections; furthermore a notation is introduced allowing for transforming and manipulating SRPs. Using this notation, a planning system can diagnose and forestall common flaws in robot plans that cannot be dealt with in other planning representations. Finally the language for writing SRPs is extended into a high-level language that can handle both planning and execution actions.
