Deux réalités accablent ces continents : la pauvreté, sans cesse grandissante des paysanneries, et la fragilisation des solidarités villageoises. Jacques Chonchol propose, pour faire échec à la pauvreté, de revaloriser l'aspect rural, d'encourager une industrialisation appropriée aux campagnes et aux paysans, de favoriser l'émancipation des femmes qui sont à la base des cultures, de rétablir les nécessaires équilibres avec l'écosystème. Mais ces diverses propositions doivent être resituées dans leur contexte, et c'est pourquoi l'ouvrage effectue, chapitre après chapitre, un véritable tour du monde. Le déficit alimentaire, les problèmes fonciers, l'intervention de l'État, l'enseignement agricole, l'influence du modèle occidental de développement, les structures familiales, l'échange inégal ville/campagne, etc., différent d'une région à une autre. La ville, la modernité, la division internationale du travail, lancent de véritables défis aux communautés rurales. Les réponses sont à formuler et à mettre en œuvre dès aujourd'hui.
