This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of works on pattern formation and stability of magnetic colloids. Magnetic liquids can be investigated in different scenarios. Geometry (quasi 1, 2 and 3 dimensional vessels ), scales (molecules, macroscopic particles) and the type of suspension (e.g., ferromagnetic, superparamagnetic) employed in experiments completely modify the aggregation process. The observed patterns in the fluid range from surface waves to bulk chains and bundles. The approaches presented in this book use standard statistical means such as the Gibbs free energy and chemical potential. Numerical works are implemented employing methods such as Monte Carlo or Langevin dynamics simulations. Kinetic theory is used in theoretical approaches being successfully applied to algorithms such as the Lattice-Boltzmann method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the fascinating properties and applications of magnetic fluids - also called ferrofluids - is rapidly growing, making it necessary to provide, at regular intervals, a coherent and tutorial account of the combined theoretical and experimental advances in the field. This volume is an outgrow of seven years of research by some 30 interdisciplinary groups of scientists: theoretical physicists describing the behaviour of such complex fluids, chemical engineers synthesizing nanosize magnetic particles, experimentalist measuring the fluid properties and mechanical engineers exploring the many applications such fluids offer, in turn providing application-guided feedback to the modellers and requests for the preparation of new fluid types to chemists, in particular those providing optimum response to given magnetic field configurations. Moreover, recent developments towards biomedical applications widens this spectrum to include medicine and pharmacology. Consisting of six large chapters on synthesis and characterization, thermo- and electrodynamics, surface instabilities, structure and rheology, biomedical applications as well as engineering and technical applications, this work is both a unique source of reference for anyone working in the field and a suitable introduction for newcomers to the field.

Book excerpt: Systems displaying competing interactions of some kind are widespread - much more, in fact, as commonly anticipated (magnetic and Ising-type interactions or the dynamics of DNA molecules being only two popular examples). Written for researchers in the field with different professional backgrounds, this volume classifies phenomena not by system but rather by the type of competing interactions involved. This allows for a straightforward presentation of the underlying principles and the universal laws governing the behaviour of different systems. Starting with a historical overview, the author proceeds by describing self-competitions of various types of interactions (such as diploar or multipolar interactions), competitions between a short-range and a long-range interaction (as in Ising systems or DNA models) or between a long-range interaction and an anisotropy (as in ultrathin magnetic films or magnetic nanoparticles) and finally competitions between interactions of the same range (as in spin glasses). Each chapter contains a few problems with solutions which provide suitable material for lecturers of mathematics and physics as well as biology courses. A vast body of references to the original literature make the volume self-contained and ideally suited to master this interdisciplinary field.
