Book excerpt: It has long been a matter of concern to teachers in higher education why certain students ‘get stuck’ at particular points in the curriculum whilst others grasp concepts with comparative ease. What accounts for this variation in student performance and, more importantly, how can teachers change their teaching and courses to help students overcome such barriers? This book examines the difficulties of student learning and offers advice on how to overcome them through course design, assessment practice and teaching methods. It also provides innovative case material from a wide range of institutions and disciplines, including the social sciences, the humanities, the sciences and economics.

Book excerpt: Overcoming the Co-Parenting Trap helps parents understand the reasons why some children resist a parent during divorce-a reality that touches many families. Combining years of experience in intensive work with families struggling with parent-child estrangement, Overcoming Barriers' first publication offers practical insight on two central questions: Why does a child resist contact with a parent? How can I best support my child to have healthy relationships with both parents? This guide details practical strategies for working through the significant challenges both parents may experience with a resisting child. Common scenarios and concrete solutions are presented both for preferred parents and resisted parents."

This TCLEE Monograph studies seven large lifeline organizations that have undertaken significant seismic improvement programs. In spite of often-cited barriers to natural hazards risk reduction, these organizations demonstrate a variety of ways to start and sustain risk-reduction programs. In these economically and politically robust organizations, top-level managers and high-level inside technical seismic advocates learned from the damage done by past earthquakes to their systems or similar systems and from research and educational programs. Then, each group developed an overall view of its system's earthquake vulnerabilities and devised adaptable, incremental seismic implementation programs.

So how much harder is the assignment in a family experiencing fractures such as divorce, estrangement, or prodigals? How are grandparents to reach grandchildren for Christ when there are such barriers? In Overcoming Grandparenting Barriers, Larry Fowler, founder of the Legacy Coalition, offers a helpful guide to influencing grandchildren's spiritual lives even in the most discouraging and hurtful situations, such as when · an adult child is not following the Lord · grandchildren are not being raised by the adult child and access to them is limited · grandparents are prohibited from addressing spiritual matters when they visit their grandchildren Overcoming Grandparenting Barriers provides guidance and strategies along with encouragement for grandparents to persevere--to understand that they are not alone and that their role is too crucial to give up on reaching the next generation for Christ.

This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, interest in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has grown. Advances in battery and other technologies, new federal standards for carbon-dioxide emissions and fuel economy, state zero-emission-vehicle requirements, and the current administration's goal of putting millions of alternative-fuel vehicles on the road have all highlighted PEVs as a transportation alternative. Consumers are also beginning to recognize the advantages of PEVs over conventional vehicles, such as lower operating costs, smoother operation, and better acceleration; the ability to fuel up at home; and zero tailpipe emissions when the vehicle operates solely on its battery. There are, however, barriers to PEV deployment, including the vehicle cost, the short all-electric driving range, the long battery charging time, uncertainties about battery life, the few choices of vehicle models, and the need for a charging infrastructure to support PEVs. What should industry do to improve the performance of PEVs and make them more attractive to consumers? At the request of Congress, Overcoming Barriers to Deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles identifies barriers to the introduction of electric vehicles and recommends ways to mitigate these barriers. This report examines the characteristics and capabilities of electric vehicle technologies, such as cost, performance, range, safety, and durability, and assesses how these factors might create barriers to widespread deployment. Overcoming Barriers to Deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles provides an overview of the current status of PEVs and makes recommendations to spur the industry and increase the attractiveness of this promising technology for consumers. Through consideration of consumer behaviors, tax incentives, business models, incentive programs, and infrastructure needs, this book studies the state of the industry and makes recommendations to further its development and acceptance.
