Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Roman History My friend Mr. Warde-fowler's admirable sketch of Cesar did not appear until my own chapter on the dictator was in print. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Roman History: For the Use of High Schools and Academies In tracing the growth of the Roman people, the effort has been made to keep clearly and prominently in view that which has given to this people their distinctive place in history, the genius for organization. The kingdom, the republic, and the empire are seen to be successive stages in the growth of a policy to bring together and organize the various elements of the ancient world. Attention is paid to the life and cus toms of the Roman people - their houses, meals, dress, mar riage and funeral customs, education, etc. But these have not been made so prominent as to lead the pupil to believe that the study of antiquities can take the place of the study of history in the proper sense of the word. Special attention is called to the maps, which are intended to show the location of every place mentioned in the text. The series of progressive maps shows in a clear way the gradual expansion of the Roman dominion. For the purpose of encouraging the reading of other books, each chapter is supplemented by two short lists of reading references, the one applying to the general subject-matter of the chapter, under the name of Selections for Reading; and the other consti tuting a Special Study upon some especially important or interesting topic. A classified list of the most valuable and available books in the English language upon Roman history will be found in the appendix to this volume. Every experi enced teacher knows that history cannot be adequately taught by means of any single book, and that too much importance cannot be attached to the use of suitable bibliographical aids. Hannibal had failed to accomplish his oath in his lifetime, but his curse was fulfilled in the legacy of revolution which he left behind him. For there followed two prime results from his invasion Of Italy: socially the whole breadth of Italy was changed, and politically the sovereignty Of Rome was transferred from the people to the senate. This little book is written to meet a need that I believe exists in many college mediaeval history classes. Experience in my own teaching work con vinces me that to understand the Middle Ages it is necessary to know something of the progress and fall of that great Empire whence feudal Europe issued, and no compact and practical sketch, suitable for the study of the average student, has come to hand. Hence the present outline history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Roman History This book is a reprint, with many additions and alterations, of the article 'Roman History' which appeared in the last edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and my best thanks are due to Messrs. Black for the ready courtesy with which they acceded to my request for its republication. My aim has been to give such a sketch of the general course of Roman history as might enable the reader to follow the main lines of movement, and grasp the characteristic features of the different periods. The lion's share of the space, some three-fifths of the whole, has been devoted to the period which extends from the tribunate of the elder Gracchus to the fall of Nero (133 B. C. - 69 A. D.), as being the period which it is most necessary for a student of Roman history to understand, and the one which is most fully illustrated by the extant ancient literature. It is also the period which probably, on these grounds, is most generally studied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Ancient History From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West, A D. 476 Histories, projected by thc'syndics of the Cambridge University Press. Of the scope' and aim of the book I have written in the Introduction; but I have a few further remarks to make, which seem to belong rather to a preface. The vastness of the period which my work covers naturally precludes any claim to high originality on my part; compelled, as I have been, to rely largely on the labours of others, I have endeavoured to use my best judgment in the choice of authorities and my utmost care and conscientiousness in the use of them. Wherever my own reading has made it possible, I have exercised an independent judgment; and, on some sections, where my own knowledge fell short, I have enjoyed the invaluable assistance of friends. That I have avoided all errors and partial statements is more than I dare hope: for all such sins of omission and commission I can. Only ask for a merciful judgment. V., VI., The republican constitution broke down under the strain put upon it by the acquisition of vast territories outside Italy. It was not very well suited to the government of Italy and the Italian islands (sicily, Sardinia, Corsica); it was utterly inadequate to the require ments of an empire extending all round the Mediterranean. In the appendix I have indicated after the name of each author the translation used. Here no name is given, the extracts were translated either by Mr. R. F. Scholz or by myself. In using the translations I have made a few slight changes in wording and punctuation. I have usually retained any important notes given in the translations. The illustrations are intended merely to suggest that pictures form a very important class of sources. In the appendix brief statements are given as to the provenance and description of these pictures. Most of our text-books are well illustrated, and their pictures should be utilized as far as possible for class room exercises. No fancy-pictures should be so used; only representations of actual remains, of statuary, or of Roman drawings. The students should describe what the picture represents and its historic importance.
