Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988, as the Berlin Wall began to quake and the United States and the Soviet Union prepared to slash their nuclear arsenals, Canada's government remained firmly tied to a Cold War vision of the world. In this book, Regehr and Rosenblum assessed the international strategic situation at the very moment that the superpowers' nuclear standoff began to melt away. Against the backdrop of significant undertakings to halt the drift towards annihilation, the authors' find much to criticize in Canadian defence policy: complicity in reckless American war-fighting strategies; undue adherence to organizations such as NATO and NORAD whose justifications were fast disappearing; a retrograde approach to defending Arctic sovereignty. The Road to Peace is a compelling document that vividly conveys the heady atmosphere of the Cold War's apogee.

Book excerpt: President Eisenhower once stated, the concept of atomic war is too horrible for man to endure and to practice, and he must find some way out of it. In The Road to Peace read about President Eisenhower and President Kennedy's pursuit of a nuclear test ban treaty, a first step in nuclear arms control with the Soviet Union. A lesser-known arms control measure is also discussed in the book, how the Soviet Union and the United States actually agreed to ban nuclear weapons from at least one part of the globe in 1959. Also read how a diplomat from Mexico led the struggle to create a nuclear weapons free zone in Latin America in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Road to Peace includes the struggles between America and Britain over the Great Lakes and the Oregon territory. Read about diplomatic initiatives after World War I when the great hope of mankind was an end to warfare. Also, there is a concluding section on the INF and Open Skies treaties.

Book excerpt: There has been quite a bit of scholarship on the history of the space race, but collaboration in space has received little attention and has usually been dismissed as a propaganda side show. This book thus fills a critical gap by showing the importance of collaboration in space as an antidote to Cold War hostilities and as an important yet underappreciated episode in the development of science and technology in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historically, strategic restraint was the dominant approach among nations active in outer space, all of whom understood that continued access to and use of space required holding back on threats or activities which might jeopardize the status quo of peace in space. However, recently there has been a discernible shift in international rhetoric towards a more offensive approach to defense in space. The U.S. move towards establishing a "Space Force" has been echoed by similar announcements in France and Japan. India launched an anti-satellite weapon test and announced proudly that it thereby joined the elite group of China, Russia and the U.S., who have all demonstrated this capability in the past. And as technologies in space advance, along with our terrestrial dependence on space-based systems for our peaceful civilian lives and for support of terrestrial warfare, the political stability of this vulnerable environment comes under threat. These factors, combined with a lack of transparency about actual capabilities and intentions on the part of all major players in space, creates a cyclical escalation which has led some commentators to describe this as a return to a Cold War-type arms race, and to the foreseeability of a space-based conflict. Due to many unique characteristics of the space domain, an armed conflict in space would be catastrophic for all players, including neutral States, commercial actors, and international civil society. Due to the specificity of the space domain, specialized expertise must be provided to decision-makers, and interdisciplinary opinions must be sought from a multitude of stakeholders. To that end, this volume provides a wide spectrum of perspectives from experts who have engaged together at a conference hosted by the Center for Ethics in the Rule of Law to discuss these issues. Ethical, legal and policy solutions are offered here by those with experience in the space sector, including academia, legal practitioners, military lawyers and operators, diplomats and policy advisors"--
