Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Unitarians and the Universalists in the United States, Vol. 10 The task attempted here is, first, to give, within the limits assigned, a history of the religious movement known as Unitarian sufficiently broad and complete for the general reader; and second, to furnish a list of authorities adequate for the uses of the special student. The latter Object, it is hoped, has been effected by ample references in the margin. A formal bibliography, partie ularly of individual lives, which are very numerous, might be extended to any length, and might hardly justify the space it would require. Besides, the value of this sketch, such as it is, depends - in the latter part especially - on its being a record of personal recollections, judgments, or impressions, left by near sixty years during which I have been a student or observer, and more than fifty while I have been, in a way, a laborer, in this field. In what is said of the incidents and actors since the movement of thought among us commonly dated between 1835 and 1840, every name is one I recall, gratefully, as that of a teacher, associate, or friend. Most of these are passed away. Of the living, only Furness and Martineau have been included; and these, in their advanced and venerated old age, already belong to history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Studies in Religion: An Introduction to Unitarianism Young people should also know their own church and faith well: this is described in the last part. For this some history of the Unitarian Church is given, in order that one may get his bearings and appreciate the sources and the cost. Some plain and positive statements of belief are given; and then there are a few chapters devoted to the working forces of the church. It is hoped that in this way the young people will be prepared for appreciative understanding and for efficient work in their church. In the Teachers' Edition suggestions are made for methods of teaching and for more extensive study by means of the larger works. Book excerpt: An updated edition of the classic introduction to the history and beliefs of Unitarian Universalism—from a senior minister of the Unitarian Church For those contemplating religious choices, Unitarian Universalism offers an appealing alternative to religious denominations that stress theological creeds over individual conviction and belief. Featuring two new chapters, a revealing and entertaining foreword by best-selling author Robert Fulghum, and a new preface by UU moderator Denise Davidoff, this updated edition of the classic introductory text on Unitarian Universalism explores the many sources of the living tradition of this ‘chosen faith’.
