Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Birds: A Popular Introduction to Ornithology Of Natural History, in as concise a form as possible, a general view of the distribution of the feathered tribes, and of their uses and importance in Creation. The classification we have followed is that proposed by Mr. G. R. Gray in his impor tant work on the Genera of Birds, and is that now adopted in the arrangement of the ornithological collection in the British Museum, to the study of which it is hoped this volume will be a useful guide. The descriptions are selected as far as practicable from original sources, and will be found, notwithstanding the succinctness with which they are given, to embody a large amount of reliable information concerning the habits and mode of life of the various races treated of while the numerous engravings by eminent artists exhibit with clearness and fidelity the leading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Birds Being an Introduction to the Study of Ornithology The Story that the Birds have to tell us is indeed a fascinating one. Beginning with the Origin and Descent of Birds during geological epochs so remote that the mind fails to grasp or realise the mighty vastness of time that separates the Then from the Now, we pass on to a consideration of their salient characteristics in existing forms, their anatomical features, the bony framework and internal organs, the peculiarities of their dermal covering, its structure, colours, and functions. Then we take up the subject of the various Groups or Orders into which systematists have divided Birds, the composition of those orders, the affinities and peculiarities of the species in them. After which we trace out the Distribution of Birds over the earth, and then endeavour to ascertain the conditions of their Dispersal and the laws that govern their Migrations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ornithology Two years after Ray's death, linn-nos, the great reformer of Natural History, was born, and in 1735 ap peared the first edition of the celebrated Systema Nat-urea. Successive editions of this work were produced under its author's supervision in 1740, 1748, 1758, and 1766. Impressed by the belief that verbosity was the bane of science, he carried terseness to an extreme which frequently created obscurity, and this in no branch of zoology more than in that which relates to Birds. Still the practice introduced by him Of assigning to each species a diagnosis by which it ought in theory to be distinguishable from any other known species, and of naming it by two words - the first being the generic and the second the specific term, was so manifest an improvement upon any thing which had previously obtained that the Linnaean method of differ entiation and nomenclature established itself before long in spite of all Opposition, and in principle became almost universally adopted. The opposition came of course from those who were habituated to the older state of things, and saw no evil in the cumbrous, half-descriptive half designative titles which had to be employed whenever a species was to be spoken of or written about. The supporters of the new method were the rising generation of naturalists, many of whose names have since become famous, but among them were some whose admiration of their chief carried them to a pitch of enthusiasm which now seems absurd. Careful as Linnaeus was in drawing up his definitions of groups, it was immediately seen that they occasionally were made to comprehend creatures whose characteristics contradicted the prescribed diagnosis. His chief glory lies in his having reduced, at least for a time, a chaos into order, and in his showing both by precept and practice that a name was not a definition. In his classifica tion of Birds he for the most part followed Ray, and where he departed from his model he seldom improved upon it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Check List of North American Birds Some of our distinguished men of science seem to have placed their collections and their suggestions at the service of Mr. Cones, but he is fundamentally an original explorer. Nobody can look over the beautiful book without feeling that the, author has added to ornithology as well as furnished its North American Key.' We wish we knew enough about the subject to convict him of a few mistakes. Having, however, great respect for specialists we never venture to intrude an Opinion we have not earned the right to give by special study. It is a modest ah dication of an insolent tyranny, but we make it with satisfaction. It would be cruel, perhaps, to disturb the useful superstition that notices of books are emuls cient and infallible. Still. We reluctantly confess that Mr. Cones is ahead of us in his particular branch of knowledge, and we have submitted to the intolerable ignominy of learning something from him with a keen sense of pleasure. Indeed this Key to North American Birds is a volume which will attract all naturalists for its accuracy of description and its contributions to the work of intelligent classification Boston Globe. Could he really be in earnest in asking the ques tion, or did he only mean to chaff me and test my knowledge of bird life? For I had just been tell ing him of my studies in ornithology. But the nonplussed expression on his face showed that he actually did not know the name of the bird, and so I answered, avoiding a patronizing tone. They also kindly permitted him to attend some of the classes of the University, an indulgence he appears to have turned to very good account.
