Book excerpt: In this thesis, the characteristics of dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) which is part of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) that is one of the largest active carbon pools on earth were investigated. Methods were developed to selectively test for sulfur-containing functional groups in different DOM samples with the help of Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Furthermore, an artificial sulfurization experiment was conducted to investigate a potential DOS source and a solar irradiation experiment with pore water DOM was conducted to test for a potential DOS sink. The main findings were that sulfonic acids are an ubiquitous structural feature and that in highly sulfidic environments also reduced DOS compounds are present. It was found that inorganic reduced sulfur species get abiotically and unselectively incorporated into DOM forming DOS in sulfidic sediments. The DOS compounds from these sediments were found to be partly photo-labile. engl.
