It is shown that very high total gains can be obtained with either of two alternatives, viz., (1) a chain of discrete complementary transistor units, or (2) a complementary transistor continuum (a concept which has no electronic analog). Whereas the total gain grows exponentially with the number of stages, the required constant photon fluxes grow only linearly with that number. High signal-to-noise ratios can be obtained without the need of cooling. However, the spectroscopic matching conditions of the two complementary materials are stringent. Under the guidance of the theoretical work, a search for suitably matching materials is now underway. (Author).

Often they have not thought in any depth about the idea, and it necessarily disturbs their psychological and intellectual frame of reference: it forces a reappraisal of what it is to be alive, what it is to be human, and whether there are profound, yet un expected, implications in the development of modern com puters. There is abundant evidence to suggest that we are wit nessing the emergence of a vast new family of life-forms on earth, organisms that are not based on the familiar metabolic chemistries yet whose manifest 'life credentials' are accumulating year by year. It is a mistake to regard biology as a closed science, with arbitrarily limited categories; and we should agree with Jacob (1974) who observed that 'Contrary to what is imagined, biology is not a unified science'. Biology is essentially concerned with living things, and we should be reluctant to assume that at anyone time our concept and understanding of life are complete and incapable of further refinement. And it seems clear that much of the continuing refinement of biological categories will be stimulated by advances in systems theory, and in particular by those advances that relate to the rapidly expanding world of computing and robotics. We should also remember what Pant in (1968) said in a different context: 'the biological sciences are unrestricted . . . and their investigator must be prepared to follow their problems into any other science whatsoever.

This Symposium reestablished the very productive series of "Light Scattering" Binational Symposia which were initi ated in Moscow in 1975. This interval, caused by serious chilling of the climate of USA-USSR collaboration, deprived the active scien tists on both sides of the opportunity to meet and interact in the active format of a conference. During this eight year interval there has been very rapid and intense development of scientific activity in the general area of laser optics phe nomena. The development of ultrafast laser sources has permitted rapid advances in time resolved spectroscopy and ultrafast processes; the field of optical bistability and strong nonlinearity became a hot topic; and intense work is now underway to clarify ideas of photon localization. These new dev elopments complement many advances in the study of low dimensional systems such as surfaces, new work on phase transitions, and novel studies of elemen tary excitations such as polariton-excitons in localized environments such as quantum wells and heterojunctions.

Book excerpt: The Optical Transistor and Switch, for which concepts and designs were developed under this program, is a device in which a radiation beam of one wavelength is controlled by a beam of a second wavelength. In contrast to other optical transistors and switches, this arrangement keeps the requirements for control and signal independent and thus adds another dimension to design. The basic device provides simply an optical path through a medium which consists of of free three-energy level atoms such as sodium vapor at very low pressures. It provides, with relatively low optical powers, satisfactory switching action and transistor saturation gains of 3-10. A subsequent concept is that of Multistate Optical Transistors based on spectroscopically complementary materials. Very high transistor gains can be achieved with two variations of this concept. However, the higher optical power demand and the stringent requirement of double resonance between two materials are important drawbacks. The third concept is the Quantum Transition Etalon which consists of a Fabry-Perot cavity enclosing the three-level medium. The QTE appears to have substantially the advantages of the two former concepts, but none of their limitations.
