Book excerpt: Without effective opposition there is no true democracy and without contribution of the prominent proponents of liberalism who have added their voices to this title, the situation in South Africa would probably be very different today. Helen Suzman takes pride of place among those liberals who devoted their lives to the fight for human rights and the rule of law in South Africa. From the start of a political career that spanned almost four decades, she challenged the iniquity of apartheid and used the privilege of Parliament to expose the inhumanity of a system that came to be defined as a crime against humanity. As a tribute to her extraordinary political life, the Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish studies and research at the University of Cape Town, in association with the South African Jewish Museum, mounted an exhibition in her honour. After Colin Eglin opened the exhibition, David Welsh paid formal tribute to the guest of honour who used the occasion to reflect on her career. Both speeches are included in this volume together with a series of lectures which accompanied the exhibition.

The inaugural topics include generalized rational approximation subject to linear constraints, matrix exponential approximations in the numerical solution of differential equations, unbounded fan-in circuits, and fixpoint semantics for a Petri net model of definite clause logic programs. Each article is self-contained and all assume a high sophistication in mathematics. Future volumes may focus on a special subfield such as computational graph theory, approximation, or computability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissenting Voices in American Society: The Role of Judges, Lawyers, and Citizens explores the status of dissent in the work and lives of judges, lawyers, and citizens, and in our institutions and culture. It brings together under the lens of critical examination dissenting voices that are usually treated separately: the protester, the academic critic, the intellectual, and the dissenting judge. It examines the forms of dissent that institutions make possible and those that are discouraged or domesticated. This book also describes the kinds of stories that dissenting voices try to tell and the narrative tropes on which those stories depend. This book is the product of an integrated series of symposia at the University of Alabama School of Law. These symposia bring leading scholars into colloquy with faculty at the law school on subjects at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary inquiry in law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Windownesian series features the adventures of the university student Jonathan Wills with his friends Meander, Athena, Zedekiah, as well as his roommates Alex the AI and Bobby the Alien. Each chapter centres around one topic, recording our characters experiencing it, and discussing it. Cyborg combines both AI and humans. In 2027, Dr Albert Epoch created the Living AI, which interlaces a computer brain with an existing human body. In the commencing chapter of The Windownesian, Jonathan meets his first roommate, discovers what’s so special about him, and helps him to be human. Do you have weird roommates? We all do. But do yours place strong-smelling vegetables everywhere, turn on the radio 24/7, and worst of all, insist to keep the windows shut? Have you ever wondered, what if their foreign behaviours are due to them belonging to another world? That is the roommate Jonathan going to meet in Chapter 2. It is extraterrestrial. It gives whatever it receives. Give it a hug, it grows arms to hug you back. Shoot it, it returns bullets. It’s the Chug-a-lug, the centre of Chapter 3 which descends onto Victoria Harbour. And behold, it has something to do with our alien roommate.

Book excerpt: "A cultural clearinghouse of the American 1960s and '70s as told through the story of the period's most important forgotten comedy group. This expansive book reclaims the Firesign Theatre (hazily remembered as a comedy act for stoners) as critically engaged artists working in the heart of the culture industry at a time of massive social and technological change. Working at the intersection of popular music, sound and media studies, cultural history, and avant-garde literature, Jeremy Braddock reveals how this inventive group made the lowbrow comedy album a medium for registering the contradictions and collapse of the counterculture, and traces their legacies in hip-hop turntablism, computer hacking, and participatory fan culture. Focusing on Firesign's work in Los Angeles from 1967 to 1975, Braddock deploys a vast range of material sources, informed by numerous interviews and writing in tune with the group's obsessive and ludic reflections--on multitrack recording, radio, television, cinema, early artificial intelligence, and more. This ebullient act of media archaeology reveals Firesign Theatre as authors of a comic utopian pessimism that will inspire twenty-first-century recording arts and urge us to engage the massive technological changes of our own era"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ANTICHRIST WHOM CHRIST DECLARED A Different Perspective Unlike other the antichrist is exposs this book uses the words, teachings, and actions of Jesus Christ to document whom He proclaimed the antichrist to be. The antichrist whom Jesus Christ actually actively opposed in word and deed. It confirms this reality using Biblical Scripture and the events of history, even as it focuses upon the present to reveal the antichrist and his wide-ranging scope of satanic actions in todays world here and now. TOPICS INCLUDE How Christianity and by inference, other religions too, unknowingly promote the vile evils seen in todays world. How Belief, Faith, and the Holy Bible, are cunningly used to justify and support evil, often utilizing the unwitting, and sometimes willing support of believers and the church. The satanic rationales behind terrorism, environmental destruction and toxic pollution, as well as the ongoing periodic economic crisis, and those who profit from these deliberate satanic deeds. How the media justifies and promotes evil, including by so-called religious values that brings evil into being, then perpetuates it. Non-Christian readers will find this book meaningful and useful. Like Christians, they can use it to identify and counter those who accidentally or deliberately use Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible to abuse religion and promote evils satanic agenda.
