Makin' Christmas at Holmeses is a memoir of Dan Armstrong’s travel adventures while designing, developing and buying mainly Christmas décor for D.H. Holmes Co., Ltd., a New Orleans - based department store chain. It is a time piece dating 1979-1986, as well as including an epilogue of his later personal travel adventures. There are loads of laughable moments and fun quips that Armstrong has learned along the way from travelling with eccentric companions. Included is how Christmas Ornaments are initially conceived as concepts, and how those concepts are communicated to manufacturers. It is such a thrill to see the finished product that was once only a thought in someone’s mind. This book was a project commenced and completed during the pandemic and is a result of Armstrong’s quarantine during COVID-19.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today • “Everything a romantic comedy should be: witty, relatable, and a little complicated.”—People A heartfelt debut about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who’s lost her husband and a major league pitcher who’s lost his game. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the “yips”: he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why. As the media storm heats up, an invitation from Andy to stay in Maine seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button on Dean’s future. When he moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken—and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. To move forward, Evvie and Dean will have to reckon with their pasts—the friendships they’ve damaged, the secrets they’ve kept—but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance—up until the last out. A joyful, hilarious, and hope-filled debut, Evvie Drake Starts Over will have you cheering for the two most unlikely comebacks of the year—and will leave you wanting more from Linda Holmes. Praise for Evvie Drake Starts Over “A quirky, sweet, and splendid story of a woman coming into her own.”—Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six “Effortlessly enjoyable . . . [a] pitch-perfect . . . adult love story that is as romantic as it is real.”–USA Today “Charming, hopeful, and gently romantic . . . Evvie Drake is great company.”—Rainbow Rowell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shares the story of the revolutionary Marxist and Catholic Grace Holmes Carlson and her life-long dedication to challenging social and economic inequality On December 8, 1941, Grace Holmes Carlson, the only female defendant among eighteen Trotskyists convicted under the Smith Act, was sentenced to sixteen months in federal prison for advocating the violent overthrow of the government. After serving a year in Alderson prison, Carlson returned to her work as an organizer for the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and ran for vice president of the United States under its banner in 1948. Then, in 1952, she abruptly left the SWP and returned to the Catholic Church. With the support of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who had educated her as a child, Carlson began a new life as a professor of psychology at St. Mary’s Junior College in Minneapolis where she advocated for social justice, now as a Catholic Marxist. The Fierce Life of Grace Holmes Carlson: Catholic, Socialist, Feminist is a historical biography that examines the story of this complicated woman in the context of her times with a specific focus on her experiences as a member of the working class, as a Catholic, and as a woman. Her story illuminates the workings of class identity within the context of various influences over the course of a lifespan. It contributes to recent historical scholarship exploring the importance of faith in workers’ lives and politics. And it uncovers both the possibilities and limitations for working-class and revolutionary Marxist women in the period between the first and second wave feminist movements. The long arc of Carlson’s life (1906–1992) ultimately reveals significant continuities in her political consciousness that transcended the shifts in her particular partisan commitments, most notably her life-long dedication to challenging the root causes of social and economic inequality. In that struggle, Carlson ultimately proved herself to be a truly fierce woman.

Being of a nervous and superstitious disposition, her Ladyship lives in fear. Her husband and elder son were recently murdered, apparently by the ghost of a court jester who was executed on the site centuries before. The apparition has warned that she, too, is to die. Holmes rejects a supernatural explanation, although his adversary seems unaffected by gunfire and is able to take flight and disappear. The Great Detective brings his powers to bear, but still the killings continue...

Book excerpt: After Sherlock Holmes retired to the South Downs to raise bees - and of course, study and document their habits with his usual care and precision - Dr. John Hamish Watson reopened a medical practice and continued to live at 221B Baker Street for several years. Finally however, the absence of the excitement of sharing adventures with the great detective and acting as his biographer wore down the good Doctor’s joie de vivre, and he decided to close his medical practice and retire as Holmes had done. He wrote his intentions to his cousin in Scotland, Ainsley Douglass, and received an enthusiastic response with an invitation to come and live with Ainsley and his wife Bonnie. “Our children have families of their own now, and as Bonnie and I are getting on, we find that rattling around in our big house just increases our feeling of loneliness. We would love to have you here, both for your company and, of course, your fascinating recollections of your adventures with Mr. Holmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHISKEY, YOU'RE THE DEVIL Things are looking up for Addison Holmes. She's about to take her P.I. exams, she's living in sin with the man of her dreams, and she hasn't had a phone call from her mother in three whole days. But she should have known things were too good to last. When Rosemarie Valentine's fingerprints are found on the murder weapon used to kill a sex shop owner, it's up to Addison and the gang to clear her name before Rosemarie is thrown in the pokey with no hope of getting out again. With the help of Nick, Savage, Kate, and Addison's mom and sister, what could possibly go wrong? WHISKEY ON THE ROCKS In Liliana Hart's New York Times bestselling Addison Holmes series, Addison bites off more than she can chew as she investigates a decades-old murder. When Addison's Aunt Scarlet comes to town saying she found a murderer, she, Addison, and Rosemarie decide to go undercover because of the high bounty on the Romeo Bandit's head. The only problem is they have to go undercover at a nudist colony. WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT Addison Holmes is at it again in this New York Times bestselling series by Liliana Hart. In her fifth adventure, Addison sets out to discover who stole a kidney from her newest client—a kidney that was still very much attached to its owner when it was taken. With her brand new P.I. license in hand, a marriage proposal on her mind, and Aunt Scarlet and Rosemarie as backup, nothing could possibly go wrong. Join Addison and the gang for a real Charlie Foxtrot of a case in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! WHISKEY AND GUNPOWDER Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something…bedazzled? In twenty-four hours, Addison Holmes will be a married woman. Maybe. A week to plan a wedding in the south is not for the fainthearted, but Addison (along with the help of her neurotic mother, unreliable sister, and unpredictable Aunt Scarlet) are determined to pull it off. There’s just one problem. Okay…two problems. Problem #1: The preacher is missing. This seems like a bad omen to Addison, and all the best investigators she knows are taking part in the pre-wedding festivities (that’s code for drunk). That leaves one man for the task: FBI Special Agent Matt Savage. But Addison isn’t sure he’s the man for the job. She and Savage have a complicated history, and Savage could make the preacher disappear forever if it served his own agenda. Problem #2: Rosemarie Valentine is in charge of booking the bridal party for a spa day. Enough said.
