Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Battles in the Century During the eighteenth century, by means of her navy, England laid the foundations of that great Colonial Empire which has brought to her in the present century both wealth and power. Many col ouies, indeed, acquired during that period were sur rendered after conquest, a doubtful policy which may perhaps never be repeated. The sailing period which began about 1571 at the time of the battle of Lepanto, and during which all this great work was accomplished, came gradually to its death about the middle of the nineteenth century, when it was sup planted by steam power. Thus the nineteenth century saw one of those revolutions in the methods of naval warfare which mark the beginning of a new epoch. It seemed as if the magic wand of science had been waved over the face of the waters, transforming all that moved thereon into new and more powerful shapes. Navies were changed from wood to steel; from unarmoured to armoured, the motive power from sails to steam, and the guns from muzzle to breech-loading. The changes of tactics and methods of naval war fare produced by the introduction Of steam carry us back, singularly enough, in many respects to the starting points of all navies, the Galley Period. This period goes back, as far as we have any records, to 1400 B. C. And lasted to about 1571 and was then gradually succeeded by the Sail Period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Sail to Steam: Recollections of Naval Life If such a man has the genius of his business, as had Frois sart and Boswell, he excels in proportion to his unconscious ness of the fact; his colors run truer. For lesser gabblers, who have not genius, the best way to lose consciousness is just to let themselves go; if they endeavor to paint ar tistically the muddle will be worse. To such the proverb of the cobbler and his last is of perennial warning. AS a barber once sagely remarked to me, You can't trim a beard well, unless you're born to it. It is possible in some degree to imitate Froissart and Boswell in that marvellous diligence to accumulate material which was common to them both; but, when gathered, how impossible it is to work up that old junk into permanent engrossing interest let those answer who have grappled with ancient chronicles. It is a succinct summary of the result of studies frequently interrupted and extending over a period the length of which will be understood when it is known that the views of the author began to be published (in the 'edinburgh Review') in 1872. It was hoped that the book would have been ready for the printer two years ago; but several things happened to delay its completion. Post ponement of publication has had at least the advantage of permitting the interpolation or addition of some passages suggested by recent occurrences.
