Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Records of Pure-Bred Dairy Cows There are in Illinois over cows used for dairy pur poses, of which not over two percent are pure-brecl, and of only a fraction of one percent have accurate records of production been kept either officially or privately. Many dairymen are now add ing to their herds a few pure - bred animals as the beginning of pure - brerl herds, and still larger numbers are using pure - bred sires on grade herds. These are certainly steps in the right direction. Every possible means should be used to raise the average pro duction of dairy cows. Not all persons can have pure-brecl ani mals, but all can use good bulls to grade up their herds, and on of the best ways to convince a man of the value of well - bred stock is to demonstrate to him the effect of a pure-bretl sire on a grade herd. It should be considered little less than a crime to use a scrub' bull, or one whose dam has not produced 300 pounds of butter fat in 365 days. Had careful selection and breeding been practiced for the past sixty years by the dairymen of northern Illinois, that part of the state would' have been known the world over on ac'count of the ex cellence of its dairy cattle. During that time fifteen generations could have been produced, and fifteen generations under careful selection would have worked wonders. Very little concerted action has been taken by even the breeders of pure bred cattle to advance the interests of their respective breeds In some states there are associations for the different breeds, and numerous county or local associations. Wisconsin has about twenty-nine such associations which are doing a great work. Similar organizations sho'uld occupy a more prominent place in Illinois dairying. The herd books show that only a small part of the men owning pure - bred cattle in the state are members of even their national breed associations. The Dairy Cattle Improvement Association of Illinois was organized in 1908, and consisted of men representingthe different dairy breeds The object was to promote the spread of pure -bred cattle in the state and especially the use of pure-b-red bulls on grade herds. There are several well-known breeds of dairy cattle in (anad each having distinct qualities and each having strong partisans. While, undoubtedly, some breeds are better fitted for certain conditions of soil and climate than are others, still the matter of the choice of a breed may well be left to individual preference. In almost any location one may choose a breed for which he has a strong liking, either real or fancied, and be assured that he can establish with it a successful herd. Jerseys, Guernseys, Holsteins, Ayrshires, and even Shorthorns, make a varied and fairly long list of breeds from which to select. The comparative merits of pure-bred and grade cows. Whether pure bred or grade animals should, be selected is a matter on which there may be more difference of opinion. By purely bred animals are 'meant those that are recorded in the herd-books of their respective breeds. This is the narrow, restricted sense of the term pure-bred, but it is the one in common use in Canada. A grade ammal is the produce of a pure-bred sire on a common, or grade, dam. The produce of a pure-bred sire and a common, or scrub, dam is called a half blood; the produce of a pure-bred sire and a half-blood dam is called a three-quarters blood; a three-quarters blood bredin turn to a pure-bred sire will produce a seven-eighths blood and so on ad infinitum. Since only the offspring of pure-bred parents on both sides are eligible to registry in the herd books of any of the dairy breeds, it follows that, no matter how far the process of grading up by. The use of pure-bred sires on grade females is carried, pure breds, in the technical sense, can never be produced. Since pure-bred animals are sought for breeding purposes, the offspring of pure-bred animials are therefore more valuable and command a higher price than the offspring of grades. Hence, if the yalue of the calves is taken into consideration, a pure-bred herd is amore productive one, other things being equal, than a grade herd On the other hand, by the grading-up process referred to, continually selecting the cows that are the best producers, it is entirely possible and by no means difficult to estab lish a herd of grade cows that will equal in the production of milk any herd of pure-bred animals. Hence, if the main product alone is sought, a grade herd may produce as largely as a pure-bred one; but if the by-products are to be taken into consideration, as it was stated at the outset that they should be, a pure-bred herd certainly has an advantage over a grade herd of equal productive capacity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the Advanced Registry System of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America: And Rules for Officially Authenticated Butter Fat Tests The first association of breeders of these cattle was formed in 1871, the first herd-book being published the following year. The present holstein-friesian Association was formed in 1885 by the union of two earlier associations, and is now the largest association of breeders of pure-bred dairy cattle in the world. Frederick L. Houghton, Brattleboro, Vt., has long been the able secretary of the association, and Wing R. Smith, Syracuse, N. Y., its trusted treasurer. Mr. S. Hoxie, the veteran superintendent of Advanced Registry, retired June 7, 1905, on account of age and ill health, at which time he was succeeded by the writer. How many holstein-friesian cattle there are now living is unknown; but since the juncture of the two old associations in 1885, to November 1, 1907, females and males have been recorded. The holstein-friesian Advanced Register, based for entry upon individual merit, was established in 1885; since which time eighteen volumes have been published and the nineteenth begun, containing entries of nearly cows and 533 bulls. The age of any female is computed as that at the time of last calving or aborting, and the require ments for entry vary with the age; being not less than pounds butter fat in seven consecutive days for a heifer calving at just two years of age or younger, and increasing proportionately to not less than 12 pounds butter fat for a cow calving at five years old, there being no increased requirements for increased age after a cow reaches the age of five years. Only bulls having four or more daughters which have been entered in the Advanced Register on official records of butter fat are accepted for entry. The rules for the entry of cows.in the holstein-friesian Advanced Register are very stringent, being designed to place every Holstein - Friesian record beyond even a shadow of a doubt. Every milking during the period of test must be watched, weighed, sampled and tested. By a representative of some State Agricultural College; and thus, because of resulting expense, the bulk of its records are for short periods, largely for one week. It will be readily admitted that eighteen pounds of butter fat will make twenty - one pounds of the best commercial butter, or an average of three pounds of butter per day when eighteen pounds of fat is produced in seven consecutive days, and that almost no cows other than holstein-friesian have ever, under strict rules, produced such an amount. The records of the holstein-friesian Advanced Register show that 324 cows have produced officially in excess. Of eighteen pounds butter fat in seven consecutive days; of which 122 cows have produced between eighteen and nineteen pounds, eighty-three cows between nineteen and twenty pounds, sixty-three cows between twenty and twenty-one pounds, twenty - three cows between twenty-one and twenty-two pounds, sixteen cows between twentytwo and twenty-three pounds, nine cows between twenty-three and twenty-four pound-s, three cows between twenty-four and twenty-five pounds, three cows between twenty-five and twenty-six pounds, one cow between twenty-seven and twenty-eight pounds, and one cow over twenty-eight pounds. It must be remembered that while many of these records were made by cows much under five years of age, there were large numbers of records made by two and three year-old heifers which were, considering age, proportionately as large, yet fell short of the eighteen-pound minimum required for this list.
