Book excerpt: Because nature is so expansive and complex, so varied in its range of light, landscape painters often have to look further and more deeply to find form and structure, value patterns, and an organized arrangement of shapes. In Landscape Painting, Mitchell Albala shares his concepts and practices for translating nature's grandeur, complexity, and color dynamics into convincing representations of space and light. Concise, practical, and inspirational, Landscape Painting focuses on the greatest challenges for the landscape artist, such as: • Simplification and Massing: Learn to reduce nature's complexity by looking beneath the surface of a subject to discover the form's basic masses and shapes.• Color and Light: Explore color theory as it specifically applies to the landscape, and learn the various strategies painters use to capture the illusion of natural light.• Selection and Composition: Learn to select wisely from nature's vast panorama. Albala shows you the essential cues to look for and how to find the most promising subject from a world of possibilities. The lessons in Landscape Painting—based on observation rather than imitation and applicable to both plein air and studio practice—are accompanied by painting examples, demonstrations, photographs, and diagrams. Illustrations draw from the work of more than 40 contemporary artists and such masters of landscape painting as John Constable, Sanford Gifford, and Claude Monet. Based on Albala's 25 years of experience and the proven methods taught at his successful plein air workshops, this in-depth guide to all aspects of landscape painting is a must-have for anyone getting started in the genre, as well as more experienced practitioners who want to hone their skills or learn new perspectives.

Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, Arthur Wesley Dow literally "wrote the book" on composition—and this is it! Dow's Composition exercised an enormous influence on emerging modern artists of a century ago. A thought-provoking examination of the nature of visual representation, it remains ever-relevant to all the visual arts. A well-known painter and printmaker, Dow taught for many years at Columbia University and acted as a mentor to countless young artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe. His text, presented in a workbook format, offers teachers and students a systematic approach to composition. It explores the creation of freely constructed images based on harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. The author draws upon the traditions of Japanese art to discuss a theory of "flat" formal equilibrium as an essential component of pictorial creation. Practical and well-illustrated, this classic guide offers valuable insights into modern design.

Book excerpt: Readership This book is devoted to the study of compiler transformations that are needed to expose the parallelism hiddenin a program. This book is notan introductory book to parallel processing, nor is it an introductory book to parallelizing compilers. Weassume thatreaders are familiar withthebooks High Performance Compilers for Parallel Computingby Wolfe [121] and Super compilers for Parallel and Vector Computers by Zima and Chapman [125], and that they want to know more about scheduling transformations. In this book we describe both task graph scheduling and loop nest scheduling. Taskgraphschedulingaims atexecuting tasks linked by prece dence constraints; it is a run-time activity. Loop nest scheduling aims at ex ecutingstatementinstances linked bydata dependences;it is a compile-time activity. We are mostly interested in loop nestscheduling, butwe also deal with task graph scheduling for two main reasons: (i) Beautiful algorithms and heuristics have been reported in the literature recently; and (ii) Several graphscheduling, like list scheduling, are the basis techniques used in task ofthe loop transformations implemented in loop nest scheduling. As for loop nest scheduling our goal is to capture in a single place the fantastic developments of the last decade or so. Dozens of loop trans formations have been introduced (loop interchange, skewing, fusion, dis tribution, etc.) before a unifying theory emerged. The theory builds upon the pioneering papers of Karp, Miller, and Winograd [65] and of Lam port [75], and it relies on sophisticated mathematical tools (unimodular transformations, parametric integer linear programming, Hermite decom position, Smithdecomposition, etc.).

Book excerpt: This book explores the internet and mobile ecosystems which are powered by cloud computing – an essential, if not indispensable, part of our everyday lives. Billions of users world-wide use this technology for information sharing, communication and social networking and a high proportion of activity is driven by massive media content such as images, videos and other emerging 3D visual media. However, managing, searching and visualizing this gigantic amount of data to facilitate communication is difficult which has led to an influx of innovation and research in these areas. The research is from academics from all around the world, focusing on the intersection of mobile, cloud, visual and multimedia computing and is split into five clear parts. Topics covered in the book include mobile augmented reality, computational photography, mobile visual recognition and search, and human-computer interaction (HCI). The findings discussed is meant to spur on further creative development in both academia and industry within this area. Mobile Cloud Visual Media Computing would of great interest to researchers and academics wishing to see how the state-of-the-art in media computing research is applied to innovative applications, whilst engineers and software designers from industry will gain an insight into the key set of technologies which support mobile and cloud media computing.
