Book excerpt: Paintings by Renaissance masters Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, and Hans Holbein the Younger are among the works featured in this lavish volume, the first to comprehensively study the largest collection of early German paintings in America. These works, created in the 14th through 16th centuries in the region that comprises present-day Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, include religious images - such as "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Durer and the double-sided altarpiece "The Dormition of the Virgin" by Hans Schaufelein - as well as remarkable portraits by Holbein and the iconic "Judgment of Paris" by Cranach. In all, more than 70 works are thoroughly discussed and analyzed, making this volume an incomparable resource for the study of this rich artistic period.

Book excerpt: Many voices today call for a profound rethinking of European identity. If we wish to answer their call, however, it is necessary to start with a reconsideration of the notion of boundaries, particularly as they are at work in the Mediterranean region. The knowledge and cultural values of the Mediterranean may be the driving force able to overcome the impasse from which Europe seems unable to free itself. This volume focuses on the opportunity to employ Mediterranean knowledge and cultural values as a stimulus for the review of European policies, in the interest of creating a solid bridge between different cultural legacies and over the daunting challenges of our shared future. This means being able to stay – simul – outside and inside the borders, within and beyond the “un”- limit; looking for an image of Europe which finally stops thinking about the Mediterranean as its internal vulnus, as its lesion and contamination. This volume suggests how it is possible to think both inside and outside of borders, combining the ‘foreign’ forces of promiscuity, exchange, latency, expectancy and hope, with a ‘domestic’ circulation of thought and knowledge, in the interest of a defense of all cultures and of an egalitarian recognition of the right to dignity.

Book excerpt: This issue of Museum Studies focuses on the Art Institute of Chicago's impressive collection of Old Master paintings, works on paper, textiles, tapestries, and sculptures. With an introduction by Larry J. Feinberg on the growth and evolution of the museum's Old Master collection, the book includes five fascinating and richly illustrated essays written by museum curators and scholars. They examine recent acquisitions and present new discoveries and scholarship on a range of works--including a recently rediscovered Nativity by Fra Bartolommeo; a late-15th-century Hispano-Flemish sculpture of Saint Michael and the Devil; a series of reattributed drawings by 17th-century artists such as Guido Reni and Guercino; a pair of early-18th-century tapestries designed by the French artist Charles LeBrun; and a stunning group of works by Charles-Antoine Coypel, Jean-Baptiste Perronneau, and Maurice Quentin de La Tour, the preeminent pastellists of 18th-century France. Distributed for the Art Institute of Chicago
