Book excerpt: "Common Crisis" is a call to world government for emergency measures to halt International economic collapse and avoid the political anarchy that would inevitably follow.Three years ago, the Independent Commission on International Development Issues, under the Chairmanship of Willy Brandt, published its prophetic report, "North-South: A Program for Survival" (MIT Press paperback). This widely publicized earlier report spelled out the extent of the mutual interests between North and South and appealed for a program to avert disaster for the poorest countries, for a longer-term reorganization of the global economic system, and for a summit meeting of world leaders. Now, worsening economic conditions and the lack of global cooperation have impelled the Brandt Commission to prepare a new report - this time on not just what to do about the Third World but how to deal with our common crisis - to try to break the deadlock and avert economic collapse. In lucid and forceful terms, this book describes the different elements of crisis - in trade, in energy, in food - and concentrates on the overriding problem of how to compensate for the decline in liquidity, to reverse the decline in trade, and to revive the world economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South-South cooperation is becoming ever more important to states, policy-makers and academics. Many Northern states, international agencies and NGOs are promoting South-South partnerships as a means of ‘sharing the burden’ in funding and undertaking development, assistance and protection activities, often in response to increased political and financial pressures on their own aid budgets. However, the mainstreaming of Southern-led initiatives by UN agencies and Northern states is paradoxical in many ways, especially because the development of a South-South cooperation paradigm was originally conceptualised as a necessary way to overcome the exploitative nature of North-South relations in the era of decolonisation. This handbook critically explores diverse ways of defining ‘the South’ and of conceptualising and engaging with ‘South-South relations.’ Through 30 state-of-the-art reviews of key academic and policy debates, the handbook evaluates past, present and future opportunities and challenges of South-South cooperation, and lays out research agendas for the next 5-10 years. The book covers key models of cooperation (including internationalism, Pan-Arabism and Pan-Africanism), diverse modes of South-South connection, exchange and support (including South-South aid, transnational activism, and migration), and responses to displacement, violence and conflict (including Southern-led humanitarianism, peace-building and conflict resolution). In so doing, the handbook reflects on decolonial, postcolonial and anticolonial theories and methodologies, exploring urgent questions regarding the nature and implications of conducting research in and about the global South, and of applying a ‘Southern lens’ to a wide range of encounters, processes and dynamics across the global South and global North alike. This handbook will be of great interest to scholars and post-graduate students in anthropology, area studies, cultural studies, development studies, history, geography, international relations, politics, postcolonial studies and sociology.

Book excerpt: This book in the Focus on Gender series looks at co-operation for development: between North, South, and East; women's organisations and funding agencies; development practitioners, academics, and civil society; politicians and economists; and women and men. Currently, the world is in economic and political crisis, of which escalating conflict is a symptom. In this book, writers from South and North stress that such crisis can only be resolved if we recognise that we are all involved in a global system which perpetuates poverty and inequality, not only in the South and East, but also in the North. Organisations which seek to relieve poverty must find ways to listen to, value, and learn from Southern experience of development. Linking initiatives are one way of enabling people of different cultures and backgrounds to share experience, build mutual respect, and reach common ground, while acknowledging the value of difference. It is essential for Northern funding agencies to foster multiculturalism and gender equity within their own structures, as well as in their work with Southern counterparts. Topics covered include: making the global links between women and poverty; listening to the South; linking for solidarity; women's participation and international fora; the true meaning of partnership; and the 'feminisation' of organisational culture. Several articles reflect on the rich experience and lessons of Oxfam's Women's Linking Project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘It is there, in the background. Always. Increasingly urgent. Its ominous hum is the soundtrack to every other story we tell.’ The devastating summer of Australian bushfires underlined a terrifying sense of a world pushed to the brink. Then came Covid-19, and with it another dramatic lurch away from business as usual. Some observers are worried that the all-consuming effort to control the pandemic will distract us from the long-term challenge of limiting catastrophic climate change. At the same time, many people are hoping for a ‘green Covid-19 recovery’: a cleaner, fairer and safer world. This BWB Text brings together mātauranga Māori and Pasifika perspectives, voices from academia, activism, journalism and economics to bear witness to these troubled times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imposing Standards, Martin Hearson shifts the focus of political rhetoric regarding international tax rules from tax havens and the Global North to the damaging impact of this regime on the Global South. Even when not exploited by tax dodgers, international tax standards place severe limits on the ability of developing countries to tax businesses, denying the Global South access to much-needed revenue. The international rules that allow tax avoidance by multinational corporations have dominated political debate about international tax in the United States and Europe, especially since the global financial crisis of 2007–2008. Hearson asks how developing countries willingly gave up their right to tax foreign companies, charting their assimilation into an OECD-led regime from the days of early independence to the present day. Based on interviews with treaty negotiators, policymakers and lobbyists, as well as observation at intergovernmental meetings, archival research, and fieldwork in Africa and Asia, Imposing Standards shows that capacity constraints and imperfect negotiation strategies in developing countries were exploited by capital-exporting states, shielding multinationals from taxation and depriving nations in the Global South of revenue they both need and deserve. Thanks to generous funding from the Gates Foundation, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.
