Book excerpt: In 1066 William the Conqueror defeated the Anglo-Saxon army and became King of England. This change in ruler brought with it a significant transformation of English society and this is reflected in the architecture of the time. Nowhere more visibly is this change reflected than in church architecture, particularly in the Canterbury diocese of East Kent, an area rich in parish churches of the Norman period. Richly illustrated with detailed plans, line-drawings, and photographs, this book traces not only the history and development of more than 120 churches in this diocese, but also tells the story of the Anglo-Norman families who patrons of these churches and paid for the building of these monuments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury: With Descriptive Notes The success which has attended the small books 'Notes on the Cathedrals' emboldens the editor to attempt a series on the Parish Churches of England. The first volume is naturally devoted to the Diocese of Canterbury, and by special permission is dedicated to His Grace the Archbishop. It will be noticed that the illustrations are of the exterior of the buildings only, the descriptive notes being more especially devoted to the interior and to the history. For it is the exteriors that help to charm the English landscape, and so often draw from the traveller the exclamation, 'What a delightful old church!' All the Churches are illustrated; for although some of them may be wanting in beauty, there is not one that has not an interest of some sort. Our taste and our love will, of course, be for the Mediaeval building, for the 'ivy-mantled tower, ' or the historic monuments, but it will be a great mistake if we overlook the strikingly beautiful buildings which have been erected in recent years. Thanks are due to those of the Clergy who have supplied valuable information about the buildings. It is to be regretted that exigencies of space prevent the inclusion of much interesting matter. Mr. Oyler has visited every Church, and again regret is felt that for only a part of his notes is there room in the book. A few historical facts have been gleaned from Murray's 'Handbook of Kent, ' Mr. Walter Jerrold's 'Highways and Byways in Kent' (Macmillan), and Mr. Clinch's 'Little Guide to Kent' (Methuen) - all most useful and delightful volumes. The arrangement of the volume is in Deaneries, and as far as possible alphabetical, but the shape of the photographs, or the grouping of united benefices, has on several pages necessitated modification of the plan. In all cases the patron of the living is given. When the name is omitted the gift is with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Five of the Views of Canterbury Cathedral are from the copyrights of The Photochrom Co. All other illustrations have been specially taken by Messrs. De'ath and Dunk, of Maidstone, who have in other ways been of great service in the preparation of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true importance of cathedrals during the Anglo-Norman period is here brought out, through an examination of the most important aspects of their history. Cathedrals dominated the ecclesiastical (and physical) landscape of the British Isles and Normandy in the middle ages; yet, in comparison with the history of monasteries, theirs has received significantly less attention. This volume helps to redress the balance by examining major themes in their development between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. These include the composition, life, corporate identity and memory of cathedral communities; the relationships, sometimes supportive, sometimes conflicting, that they had with kings (e.g. King John), aristocracies, and neighbouring urban and religious communities; the importance of cathedrals as centres of lordship and patronage; their role in promoting and utilizing saints' cults (e.g. that of St Thomas Becket); episcopal relations; and the involvement of cathedrals in religious and political conflicts, and in the settlement of disputes. A critical introduction locates medieval cathedrals in space and time, and against a backdrop of wider ecclesiastical change in the period. Contributors: Paul Dalton, Charles Insley, Louise J. Wilkinson, Ann Williams, C.P. Lewis, RichardAllen, John Reuben Davies, Thomas Roche, Stephen Marritt, Michael Staunton, Sheila Sweetinburgh, Paul Webster, Nicholas Vincent

Book excerpt: Medieval stairs, galleries and upper chambers in cathedrals, abbeys, and parish churches have been an enduring source of fascination to historians and archaeologists since the eighteenth century, but their practical purposes have long been shrouded in mystery and speculation. From libraries to lights, clocks to dovecotes, from secret games of skittles played over the vaults to the daring exploits of the twelfth-century Flying Monk, Toby Huitson explores the lofty spaces, nooks and crannies of medieval upper spaces though the interrogation of a wide range of documentary, visual and archaeological materials. Evidence is revealed for over 30 different functions during the period from around AD 1000 to 1550. Generously illustrated and fully-referenced, the text is accompanied by a set of special features and a quick-reference section, making it indispensable to all those interested in medieval history and architecture. Dr Toby Huitson teaches at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers many facets of the medieval church, dealing with institutions, buildings, personalities and literature. The text explores the origins of the diocese and the parish, the history of the See of Hereford and of York Minster. It discusses the arrival of the archdeacon, the Normans as cathedral builders and the kings of England and Scotland as monastic patrons. The studies of monastic life deal with the European question of monastic vocation and with St Bernard's part in the sensational expansion of the early 12th century. An epilogue takes us to the 14th century, contrasting Chaucer's parson with an actual Norfolk rector.
