The technique of elite interviewing will be employed, to focus on the decision makers of key issues. Alexander Osterwalder's and Yves Pigneur's Business Model Canvas adapted for the nonprofit sector by Grant Smith; Jon Pratt's nonprofit revenue modeling; and Otto Scharmer's Theory U will provide a framework for analysis, the contention being that nonprofit leaders must (1) clearly understand their donor and revenue segmentation, (2) lead from the future by identifying the value proposition of and revenue requirements of the entity created through merger/alliance, and (3) effectively engage funders to maximize donor retention post-merger/alliance. A grounded theory will emerge regarding the absence of funder engagement as a potential impetus for donor attrition. Finally, a key finding will reveal a prioritization of institutional over individual funders by the leaders interviewed, creating, in turn, a potential area of focus for leadership in effectively engaging funders before, during, and after the merger/alliance process and in attracting revenue that promotes organizational stability.
