Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce a boundary integral method based on domain partition for the solution of nonlinear fluid mechanics problems including non-Newtonian applications. In the present work, the Dual Reciprocity Method has been improved by paritioning the domain into smaller sub-domains, and in each sub-domain the Dual Reciprocity Method was applied to obtain an expression for the velocity field only in terms of boundary integrals. Several numerical examples are presented including Newtonian flow at high Reynolds numbers and non Newtonian flow of polymers inside complex geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sub-domain techniques in the BEM are nowadays finding its place in the toolbox of numerical modellers, especially when dealing with complex 3D problems. We see their main application in conjunction with the classical BEM approach, which is based on a single domain, when part of the domain needs to be solved using a single domain approach, the classical BEM, and part needs to be solved using a domain approach. This has usually been done in the past by coupling the BEM with the FEM, however, it is much more efficient to use a combination of the BEM and a BEM sub-domain technique. The advantage arises from the simplicity of coupling the single domain and multi-domain solutions, and from the fact that only one formulation needs to be developed, rather than two separate formulations based on different techniques. There are still possibilities for improving the BEM sub-domain techniques. However, considering the increased interest and research in this approach we believe that BEM sub-domain techniques will become a logical choice in the future substituting the FEM whenever an efficient solution requires coupling of the BEM with a domain technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Reciprocal Materials and Systems: An Engineering Approach to the Control of Light, Sound, and Heat discusses the related concept of bound states which help confine sound and electromagnetic waves and can also lead to the control of thermal energy. The requirements for the formation of such bound states, their relationship to physical and topological characteristics of materials, and the possible application to new devices is considered. The book takes a unique approach to energy transfer in and between materials systems - considering dimensional effects, supersonic, transonic and subsonic wave motion, as well as the coupling of waves. This book is suitable for researchers in materials science, condensed matter physics, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering, and technologists aiming for better control of non-electronic physical phenomena. Provides information on how to use specific features in new and artificial materials for the control of sound, light and heat Explores dimensional considerations such as surface material phenomena that can be decoupled from bulk materials or the inside of a material Discusses new device concepts and related technologies such as energy sources, isolators, and diodes involving energy confinement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the results of a three-year research programme by a joint team of experts from four different EU countries. The main focus of this research was on investigating the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for the disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment. The contributors address many aspects that are common to underground disposal of nuclear waste, such as: the properties and behaviour of waste-isolating clay materials and practical ways of preparing and applying them, development of tools/software to assess the stability, performance, transport of contaminants inside and outside the repository, and risks associated with different repository concepts considering the long-term safety of the biosphere. Information is also included on the selection of site location, design and construction of repositories, predicting degrees of contamination of groundwater in the surroundings, estimation of isolating capacity of reference repositories, cost estimation of this approach in comparison with some other approaches, and many other relevant issues.Invaluable to researchers and engineers working in the field of hazardous (chemical) waste disposal, this title will also significantly aid experts dealing with nuclear waste.
