Book excerpt: When a terrorist escapes prison, Scotland Yard’s Jack Swann and FBI agent Johnny Harrison are on his trail in this “absolutely marvelous” series (Jack Higgins). Detective Sgt. Jack Swann, anti-terrorist agent for Scotland Yard’s Special Branch, is breathing a little easier. The international terrorist known as Storm Crow is languishing in jail after threatening to ignite a bomb in London and plotting to unleash a chemical attack in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. Then, on his way to trial, the prisoner breaks free. He returns to the world’s stage with a shocking act of violence—only to be trailed from the UK to the United States by Swann. And that’s precisely what the madman wants. Enlisting the help of FBI Special Agent Johnny Harrison, Swann tracks his nemesis across the heartland of America—from Georgia to Nevada—in a bizarre spree of mass murders calculated to trap both men in an ingenious and terrifying endgame. Because Storm Crow is more insidious, and more powerful, than Swann and Harrison ever imagined. New York Times–bestselling author Jack Higgins called Storm Crow “one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year.” Now the coldblooded terrorist is at large once again—and the stakes are even higher—in Nom de Guerre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What grammarians say should be has perhaps less influence on what shall be than even the more modest of them realize ...' No book had more influence on twentieth-century attitudes to the English language in Britain than Henry Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage. It rapidly became the standard work of reference for the correct use of English in terms of choice of words, grammar, and style. Much loved for his firm opinions, passion, and dry humour, Fowler has stood the test of time and is still considered the best arbiter of good practice. In this new edition of the original Dictionary, David Crystal goes beyond the popular mythology surrounding Fowler's reputation to retrace his method and arrive at a fresh evaluation of his place in the history of linguistic thought. With a wealth of entertaining examples he looks at Fowler's stated principles and the tensions between his prescriptive and descriptive temperaments. He shows that the Dictionary does a great more than make normative recommendations and express private opinion. In addition he offers a modern perspective on some 300 entries, in which he shows how English has changed since the 1920s. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: The Trials and Tribulations of a ZIPRA Soldier is a riveting spider web story of courage, determination, pursuit of justice and survival against all odds. The reader is taken on a path of unparalleled heroism and determination of a young Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) soldier, Churchill Mpiyesizwe Guduza. Churchill was born in Johannesburg to a Rhodesian father, Makhathini Bhekisizwe Guduza and Amy Poppy Lottering, a South African. After attending Fatima Secondary School in Rhodesia, with his father in continued political detention and his mother merely scrapping a living in the rural hinterlands of Rhodesia, he was compelled to leave for Johannesburg in early 1973 where his already shaped political consciousness led him to participate in the June 1976 Soweto student uprisings. At just under 20 years of age, Churchill escaped South Africa to join ZIPRA in Zambia, just in time before the apartheid net rapidly closed in on him. No sooner had Churchill joined ZIPRA than he experienced similar injustices which he immediately opposed with resolute bravery. Upon completion of military training in Angola, he was immediately deployed to the battlefields of Rhodesia where his unit gallantly fought against the Rhodesian security forces. Churchill's nom de guerre was Taffy Carlos. From Rhodesia, Churchill returned to Zambia to face off ZIPRA's High Command, from where he fled to Angola. After his incarceration in Angola, he returned to independent Zimbabwe, from where he again escaped to the United Kingdom via Botswana and Zambia. Today, he leads the Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF), which seeks to EXIT Zimbabwe, and establish the Federal Republic of Mthwakazi.
