Book excerpt: This commemoration booklet focuses on naval air power during the final years of the Vietnam War. For much of this period, Navy aircraft sought to hamper the flow of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos—a huge investment in air power resources that ultimately proved fruitless. After North Vietnam’s invasion of the South in 1972, however, Navy tactical aviation, as well as naval gunfire support, proved critical, not only in blunting the offensive but also in persuading North Vietnam to arrive at a peace agreement in Paris in1973. The Navy’s forward presence saved the day in 1972 and allowed President Nixon to finally achieve “peace with honor.”

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the three prongs of the naval trident that President Nixon wielded during the final years of the Vietnam War: naval air power, naval bombardment, and mine warfare. For much of this period, Navy aircraft sought to hamper the flow of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos-a huge investment in air power resources that ultimately proved fruitless. After North Vietnam's invasion of the South in 1972, however, Navy tactical aviation, as well as naval bombardment, proved critical not only in blunting the offensive but also in persuading North Vietnam to arrive at a peace agreement in Paris in 1973. For the first time in the war, the Navy was also authorized to close Haiphong Harbor and North Vietnam's other ports with naval mines-an operation that still stands out as a textbook example of how mine warfare can inflict a major economic and psychological blow on the enemy with minimal casualties for either side. Thus, naval power was indispensible to ending America's longest war. -- Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 31 January 1968, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) guerrillas launched a spectacular offensive in South Vietnam. Five of the country's six major cities, 36 of its 44 provincial capitals, and 64 of its 245 district capitals were attacked that day. A sapper squad even penetrated the grounds of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. The media broadcast images of combat at the embassy and in other key cities, causing tremendous psychological shock for the American viewing public. Ultimately, U.S. and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) troops killed or captured most of the enemy combatants in Saigon in the next few days. Allied troops quelled most of the fighting in the rest of the country by March, killing over 58,000 NVA and VC troops in the process. The ARVN suffered 4,954 dead, and the Americans, 3,895. It would take North Vietnam four years to rebuild a force capable of mounting a similar offensive, and the Viet Cong never recovered.

Book excerpt: President Nixon with his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, developed the Paris Agreement Treaty that offered the United States “peace and honor "by bringing home American prisoners of war and ending combat operations for the U.S. armed forces. During this time frame, political scandals were underway around Nixon’s Watergate affair that involved Nixon’s direction of illegal activities and his efforts to cover up those crimes that led to Nixon’s resignation and Gerald Ford resuming title as President of the United States (POTUS). Now, the U.S. Navy was embarking on a large number of refugees and positioning itself towards the Philippines and Guam. The unexpected number of refugees that could pose a potential security concern worried the Navy and they made arrangements to offload many of them to both Guam and the Philippines. Medical attention was also provided to many of these refugees. You will also read about the recovery of the SS Mayaguez by the Henry B. Wilson guided missile destroyer that was able to intercept the Mayaguez ship as it entered into international waters. This final volume within the series, chronicles how, as the decades-long struggle in Southeast Asia came to a climax in the spring of 1975, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps saved thousands of U.S. citizens and pro-American Vietnamese and Cambodians from the victorious Communist forces. Book excerpt: Merchant marines and the military sea transportation ships (MSTS) are featured early in this book to showcase how they have been developed compared to prior wars. Combined with Marines and U.S. Army troop forces on the ground through Viet Cong, an aerial combat campaign was also pursued from American ships. A key component featured within this resource is the organization of the Trans-Pacific Logistics Operation. With Vice Admiral Lawson P. Ramage leadership at the helm, he maintained the flow of essential supplies to the fighting of forces as a method to improve the operations’ function and cost effectiveness. He authorized and administered container ships to include refrigerated cargo that greatly increased the availability of quality food. These logistics helped to improve and expand South Vietnam’s port facilities to enable the delivery of fully-loaded ships. The National Climate Assessment assesses the science of climate change and its impacts across the United States, now and throughout this century. It documents climate change related impacts and responses for various sectors and regions, with the goal of better informing public and private decision-making at all levels. A team of more than 300 experts, guided by a 60-member National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee, produced the full report. The assessment draws from a large body of scientific peer-reviewed research, technical input reports, and other publicly available sources; all sources meet the standards of the Information Quality Act. The report was extensively reviewed by the public and experts, including a panel of the National Academy of Sciences, the 13 Federal agencies of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and the Federal Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a much-needed theory of tactical air power to explain air power effectiveness in modern warfare with a particular focus on the Vietnam War as the first and largest modern air war. Phil Haun shows how in the Rolling Thunder, Commando Hunt, and Linebacker air campaigns, independently air power repeatedly failed to achieve US military and political objectives. In contrast, air forces in combined arms operations succeeded more often than not. In addition to predicting how armies will react to a lethal air threat, he identifies operational factors of air superiority, air-to-ground capabilities, and friendly ground force capabilities, along with environmental factors of weather, lighting, geography and terrain, and cover and concealment in order to explain air power effectiveness. The book concludes with analysis of modern air warfare since Vietnam along with an assessment of tactical air power relevance now and for the future.
