Book excerpt: Over the years, the construction of models has played an important part in the discovery and dissemination of knowledge. The study of problems involving the coupling of several systems has been widely explored, essentially in the function of the change of constructive characteristics of machines and structures. Accordingly, vibrating (oscillatory) processes can be divided into the following types: free, forced, parametric, and self-excited oscillations. Furthermore, two or more oscillations can interact in the same oscillatory system. This book provides a comprehensive overview of oscillators and their applications. It includes eight chapters organized into three sections “MEMS and NEMS”, “Vibrations” and “Modeling”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on a selection of invited presentations from a topical workshop, focusses on time-variable oscillations and their interactions. The problem is challenging, because the origin of the time variability is usually unknown. In mathematical terms, the oscillations are non-autonomous, reflecting the physics of open systems where the function of each oscillator is affected by its environment. Time-frequency analysis being essential, recent advances in this area, including wavelet phase coherence analysis and nonlinear mode decomposition, are discussed. Some applications to biology and physiology are described. Although the most important manifestation of time-variable oscillations is arguably in biology, they also crop up in, e.g. astrophysics, or for electrons on superfluid helium. The book brings together the research of the best international experts in seemingly very different disciplinary areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely publicised disasters serve as a reminder to the maritime profession of the eminent need for enhancing safety cost-effectively and as a strong indicator of the existing gaps in the stability safety of ships and ocean vehicles. The problem of ship stability is so complex that practically meaningful solutions are feasible only through close international collaboration and concerted efforts by the maritime community, deriving from sound scientific approaches. Responding to this and building on an established track record of co-operative research between UK and Japan, a Collaborative Research Project (CRP) was launched in 1995. This volume includes selected material from the first four workshops: 1st in University of Strathclyde, July 1995 organized by Professor Vassalos; 2nd in Osaka Japan, Osaka University, November 1996 organized by Professor Masami Hamamoto; 3rd in Crete Greece, Ship Design Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA-SDL), October 1997 organized by Professor Apostolos Papanikolaou; and 4th in Newfoundland Canada, Institute for Marine Dynamics, September 1998 organized by David Molyneux. It contains 46 papers that represent all currently available expertise on ship stability, spanning 17 countries from around the world. The framework adopted for grouping the papers aims to cover broad areas of ship stability in a way that it provides a template for future volumes.

Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the Symposium on "Recent Developments in Non-linear Oscillations of Mechanical Systems", held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 2 - 5 March 1999. This Symposium was initiated and sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (lUI AM) and organised in conjunction with Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Ihe purpose of the Symposium was to bring together scientists active in different fields of oscillations with the aim to review the recent progress in theory of oscillations and engineering applications and to outline the prospects in its further achievements to then co-ordinate and direct research in this field to further co-operation between scientists and various scientific institutions. An International Scientific Committee was appointed by the Bureau of IUI AM with the following members: Nguyen Van Dao (Vietnam, Co-Chairman) E.J. Kreuzer (Germany, Co-Chairman) D.H. van Campen (The Netherlands) F.L. Chernousko (Russia) A.H. Nayfeh (U.S.A) Nguyen Xuan Hung (Vietnam) W.O. Schiehlen (Germany) J.M.T. Thompson (U.K) Y. Veda (Japan). This Committee selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented at the Symposium. As a result of this procedure, 52 active scientists from 16 countries responded to the invitation, and 42 papers were presented in lecture and poster discussion sessions.

Book excerpt: The main theme of the proposed book is devoted to investigation of non-trivial problems of functioning of Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF) electronic devices and systems in the various type dynamic instability modes. Both flows and maps (representations) are considered because the relation between maps and flows was repeatedly discussed in different publications. On the contrary, all systems described in the offered book for the first time are considered from the point of view either internal structure, or the description and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to introduce the irrational elliptic function series, providing a theoretical treatment for the smooth and discontinuous system and opening a new branch of applied mathematics. The discovery of the smooth and discontinuous (SD) oscillator and the SD attractors discussed in this book represents a further milestone in nonlinear dynamics, following on the discovery of the Ueda attractor in 1961 and Lorenz attractor in 1963. This particular system bears significant similarities to the Duffing oscillator, exhibiting the standard dynamics governed by the hyperbolic structure associated with the stationary state of the double well. However, there is a substantial departure in nonlinear dynamics from standard dynamics at the discontinuous stage. The constructed irrational elliptic function series, which offers a way to directly approach the nature dynamics analytically for both smooth and discontinuous behaviours including the unperturbed periodic motions and the perturbed chaotic attractors without any truncation, is of particular interest. Readers will also gain a deeper understanding of the actual nonlinear phenomena by means of a simple mechanical model: the theory, methodology, and the applications in various interlinked disciplines of sciences and engineering. This book offers a valuable resource for researchers, professionals and postgraduate students in mechanical engineering, non-linear dynamics, and related areas, such as nonlinear modelling in various fields of mathematics, physics and the engineering sciences.
